90,000 Colombians displaced so far this year: NGO

James Bargent

Nearly 90,000 Colombians were forced from their homes by violence or intimidation in the first half of 2011, according to a report published on Friday by the Office of Human Rights and Displacement (CODHES).

~snip~
According to CODHES, the situation has changed little under the presidency of Juan Manuel Santos, despite the rapidly changing nature of Colombia’s conflict.

The NGO state neo-paramilitary groups and criminal gangs such as the "Aguilas Negras," "Los Rastrojos" and "Los Machos" were responsible for most of the forced displacement, followed by guerrilla groups and the Colombian army.

Romero said the “new paramilitary groups are in a good part of the national territory and are consolidating a strategy of control and intimidation of the population aimed at avoiding the restitution of land to displaced people.”

'Paramilitaries preparing to attack north Colombia humanitarian zone'

Paramilitary forces have been mobilizing to launch an assault on communities in humanitarian zones in northern Colombia, according to community representatives.

Self-Determining Communities, Life, Dignity (CAVIDA) released a statement saying reliable sources had informed them paramilitaries were gathering in towns near the humanitarian zones of Nueva Vida and Nueva Esperanza en Dios in the region of Uraba.

The humanitarian zones at Nueva Vida and Nueva Esperanza en Dios were set up by people displaced by paramilitaries in 1997 who have since returned to the land. The zones are supposed to be demilitarized.

CAVIDA claim that approximately 100 paramilitaries are already in the town of Carmen del Darien in Choco, while in the Antioquian towns of Turbo, Apatado and Chigorodo they are recruiting local youths for the assault, paying them approximately $420 each.

6. Actually, Colombia is probably the most stable country in
Latin America. With one exception (1949-1952) it has always been governed by a democratically and popularly elected government, unlike most of its neighbors. While it has had an ongoing problem with subversion since 1948 it still maintains excepionally strong economic numbers - its credit rating is impeccable. All this while fighting a bloody insurgency backed by narcotraffickers.

7. Yeah. Colombia is probably the most stable narco-state with a death squad army in Latin America.
Your "subversion" "backed by narco-traffickers" is an excellent definition of the government that sits in Bogota.
