Home / News / Local / Local 'Arrogant' Florida bumps primary ahead of Iowa caucuses; Iowa, N.H. scra
Source: Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier

DAVENPORT, Iowa --- Florida's decision to change its primary date to Jan. 31 is an act of "arrogance," the Iowa Republican Party chairman said this morning, reacting to the Sunshine State's formal declaration that it's moving its primary date up in contravention of party rules.

The move will squeeze the presidential nominating calendar and force the Iowa caucuses to move earlier in the year, possibly Jan. 5 or 9.

Florida's move has been expected for days, but now that it's official, it's set in motion a chain of events that will upset the primary calendar.

It appears it will be at least next week, however, before new dates are set.

We saw a little bit of this going on in 2008 with the Democratic caucuses. The article goes on to state how moving the caucus up will tend to favor the mid-December front-runners. It will be interesting to see how this jockeying for position affects the results in the Republican caucuses.

I know many here don't think Iowa should be first, but I believe Iowa is very much a purple state that well reflects trends in the electorate on the Democratic side. I will agree that Iowa Republicans are more conservative than in the rest of the country and they are not as representative as they might be. But Iowa Dems, and the independents who caucus with them, are representative. And yes, Iowa is very white, but we are increasing our minority population all the time, plus if you look at the Democratic candidates and positions supported, you'll see they reflect the country as a whole.

1. This state has gone crazy...we have allen worst and governor
rotten scott, and other humiliating professional politicians...It wouldn't surprise me if they decided to close the voting booths in poor neighborhoods....or disqualify the voters if they don't own property.
Please come to Florida and buy my house so I can move to a sane state.

3. Florida
is like the Wild West currently. And this isn't exaggeration or hyperbole on my part either.

2. The First Primaries need to be rotated
NH and Iowa are NOT representative of america, and need to quit their whining.

4. Iowa doesn't HAVE a primary, its a caucus.
And the New Hampshire primary is a closed primary.

They are calculated, between them, to winnow out the field.

The Dems included S. Carolina and I think (?) Nevada before
"Super Tuesday" in 08, but Michigan and Florida jumped the
line and were disqualified per DNC rules.

I agree that some rotation is needed, the problem
is that we could wind up having all the states trying
to jockey their way up and soon we'd have ALL primaries
and caucuses on the same day, INSURING that the hand picked,
name recognized candidate would win without debate.

I would NEVER support that.

If states want to rotate, they will have to adhere to
caucus or closed primary races to ensure we really have
a CHOICE of candidates.

6. Caucuses are not representative of the general party
Caucuses should be replaced by closed primaries.

7. NH isn't "closed".
Our (majority) "Undeclared" voters (who are mostly all
closet Republicans) can take either party's ballot;
that's why NH routinely votes for *LOUSY* Democratic
candidates.

8. Iowa is just whining because they really aren't that relevant. Their
electoral votes matter only in a very close election. The caucasus are the only thing they got going.

Florida on the other hand is a big prize - and still is growing. I believe we are adding several districts & electoral votes before the next election.

Revision of the order is past due - my recommendation is to move to merit-based and order the state primaries based on voter turnout in the last election.

9. primaries suck in general
I would say the larger states, Florida included, should have theirs last, as it simply will take time to give them the attention it would an Iowa. Let us be the equivalent of the ninth through 12th rounds in Boxing, the ones that see if the person can take punches as well as give them.
