Yemeni jet mistakenly bombs army post, kills 30
Source: The Associated Press

SANAA, Yemen (AP) -- A government warplane has mistakenly bombed an army position in southern Yemen, killing at least 30 soldiers and wounding many more, military and medical officials said on Sunday.

The officials said the bombing, which took place on Saturday evening in the southern Abyan province, targeted an abandoned school used as shelter by soldiers of the army's 119th Brigade.

The school is located just east of Abyan's provincial capital Zinjibar, where militants linked to al-Qaida have been in control since May.

Heavy fighting has been raging in the area for days as part of the army's months long campaign to seize back Zinjibar from the militants.

1. Oops. That friendly fire is deadly.
But, perhaps it will end the fighting sooner since there are fewer fighters.

May the people of Yemen know peace and prosperity return to their land. May all people know peace and may prosperity return to our world.

4. Not likely US-trained
Yemen operates mostly ex-Soviet aircraft.

Though I'm sure they get all kinds of friendly advice from the CIA thanks to the war on "terror."

9. Fighting, air strikes kill 16 in Yemen
SANAA | Tue Oct 4, 2011 9:53pm IST

(Reuters) - Mortar fire killed two Yemenis and wounded six in Sanaa on Tuesday in what appeared to be fighting in the capital between soldiers loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh and troops siding with anti-government protesters.

A doctor said the victims were civilians hit by a mortar round that landed in a market in a district contested by government troops and those of rebel general Ali Mohsen, a former Saleh ally. One of the dead was aged 14.

The doctor said he had received death threats for helping the wounded and a bag of bullets had been thrown into his yard as a warning.

"We are treating these protesters and civilians but the government wants to threaten us to stop us doing our job. Now they are threatening my family," he said ...
