Poll: Half of U.S. says Afghan war not a success
Source: CBS News

Half of Americans think the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan hasn't been a success, a CBS News poll released Monday shows.

This week marks the 10th anniversary of the war's beginning, and "CBS Evening News" anchor Scott Pelley will broadcast reports on the war from Kandahar, Afghanistan, Monday and Tuesday nights.

While 50 percent of Americans don't consider the war to be a success, 39 percent of Americans do.

When respondents' answers were broken down by political group -- Democrat, independent and Republican -- Republicans were the only political group where more respondents considered the war a success (49 percent) than didn't (41 percent). Fifty-five percent of Democrats don't consider the war a success; 35 percent do. With independents, thirty-six percent called the war a success and 52 percent didn't.

1. And, what criteria is the other "half" using to call it a success?
Inquiring minds would love to know...:shrug:

2. Let's kill some more terrorists
That'll spike those numbers!

Of course, we don't really need to worry about public opinion. The war will go on, regardless of cost or any metric for success. It's just a bunch of volunteers getting sent over there, and with the timidity of the Fourth Estate, we can be sure that any bad news or results will be filtered out long before they seep into the public consciousness. As long as "support the troops" and "they're volunteers" work as trump cards, any other consideration is moot.

When those old reliables stop working, that will be time for concern, and hopefully that will be way down the road and somebody else's problem. Worked for the Bush Gang, and is working so far for the Obama Gang. Too bad for the schnook trying to find a chair when the music stops, but that's politics. Oh, and keep sending your sons and daughters into the military, America. We need more bodies to throw into the grinder.

3. Since when did we have a "War of Success?"
Was WWII the last success?

Korea was a stalemate;
We lost Vietnam;
The Gulf Wars were based on lies...and we're losing those too.

Should this come as a surprise?

9. The movie "Stripes" jumps at me ...
"But we're American soldiers! We've been kicking ass for 200 years! We're 10 and 1!" - Winger

Of course, I don't think that included Korea and that was 30 years ago.

War is failure at diplomacy. Or outright aggression.

5. SHIT - 99% of us could call it a faliure
and that wouldn't alter the course of it one bit. It's the "one percenters" that own and operate this contrived conflict. The only "consequence" the rest of us constitute is the money we keep the 1% fed with.

7. ...and it never will be.
Until a strong majority of the populace stand up strongly to the terrorists and crazy...no one can win there.

8. Ya think?
Who can take over after the USSR and the US have failed? Is it necessary to have someone in there at all times?

11. And 1% say it has lasted shorter than expected?
But it isn't over yet, how in the world does that make any sense.

Oh yeah, it doesn't.
