Nurses to Join March on Wall Street October 5; Demand Wall Street Transaction Tax – an “FTT”
Source: National Nurses United

National Nurses United, the largest union and professional association of nurses in the US – with 170,000 members, will be represented at the Wall Street March on October 5 by contingents including from Maryland, Pennsylvania, California, Washington, D.C., Illinois and New York. NNU is joining other unions, organizations and community groups in support of Occupy Wall Street. The Wall Street March begins at 5p.

NNU is pressing for a financial transaction tax (FTT) which was in effect in the US from 1914 to 1966. Proponents, including NNU, say hundreds of billions of dollars could be raised annually through even a modest tax rate on financial market trades of stocks, bonds, derivatives, credit default swaps, and similar financial transactions and used to help rebuild America.
In June, NNU members, joined by labor and community activists, rallied in support of such a tax on Wall Street across from the New York Stock Exchange, and outside the U.S. headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C.

Here is the National Nurses United Statement in Support of the OccupyWallStreet.org actions in New York

September 30, 2011

National Nurses United (NNU), the nation’s largest registered nurses union and professional association, representing 170,000 direct care RNs, stands in support of, and in solidarity with, the ongoing OcuppyWallStreet.org street protests and rallies.

We applaud the commitment, savvy and sacrifice exhibited by the multitude of students, union members, clergy, and many others from all walks of life who have come together to loudly and clearly place the blame for the nation’s pain where it belongs. Wall Street caused the financial crisis and we share your demand that Wall Street pay us back.

NNU nurses are leading the fight for a Main Street Contract for the American People. The Contract calls for meeting the basic needs of a civilized society and ensuring that all pay their fair share. Currently the wealthiest individuals and corporations do not pay that fair share. NNU is campaigning for a Financial Transaction Tax on Wall Street to help remedy that inequity.

As nurses, our motto in this fight is simple. “Heal America. Make Wall Street Pay!”

2. Some of us have been calling for a $0.0025 tax on each transaction
on Wall St. The elected officials say that they can't do it, because they would move the stock exchange to NJ or CT.
Just like when we say that they should tax the rich. Even though there is no research to validate their point, the Governor here says that he can't raise taxes on the rich, because they'll move away.

14. I wish someone would just call their bluff.
I really doubt they would move the markets away from Wall Street, or that the rich would just move away. They all stayed when taxes were much higher. They'll stay and complain about higher taxes. We can break out our tiny violins. :nopity:

34. Fuck 'em. They move anyway. Our Guv gave Fidelity Investments a huge tax benefit to
stay in Massachusetts. They said "thanks" (I assume) and moved a year later.

The go to the states where things are cheaper and they have to spend less and pay employees less.

No getting around that.

and show me your math. I believe that with the number of transactions there are on the Stock Exchange, it would raise 2.5 billion in a month. That would be only ten trillion transactions. Heck, Bank of America traded 290,000,000 shares today alone. Cisco moved 119,000,000, and GE did 79,000,000. Perhaps my calculation is a little low.

Therefore, I would appreciate seeing and understanding where you got your number from, because I believe it is fiction.

(edited for math.)

53. after the 911
after the 911 shutdown of Wall St., mirror sites were set up in the metro area and NE PA for in the event another attack disrupts the financial district. So, moving Wall St out of NYC would be as difficult as throwing a light switch, a fact that is not lost on the mayor.

54. It's fiction
Those lines took over a month to get completely setup, and they were temporary lines. A good buddy of mine worked on them. He was down in NYC for weeks after 9/11. Once the lines were no longer needed, they were either repurposed, or removed.
Nice try though.

21. Goodby Nanosecond Speculation.....
.. where supercomputers located feet away under the floor of Wall Street (cuts speed of light lag... ) take advantage of tiny price differences that only exist for microseconds. Speculation at its worst.. and the cause of "flash crashes" on the market.

While we are at it, why not really encourage actual investing? A capital gains tax thats 99.99% for transactions held less than a day, 99% under a week, 90% under a year... to zero at twenty years?

Investment is good for the country. Speculation is not.

39. Nurses kept me alive once. I'll never forget.
If they did not watch me like hawks and care for me as my mom would have if she knew what to do, I would not be here. That is my firm belief.

Doctors may cut and prescribe, but nurses heal all day and night.

At least, that was my personal experience.

So, thanks for being a nurse.

and a Wall Street Transaction Tax should be done.

Make this one of the protesters demand but make it at least a 1% tax, this would reduce the speculation make the markets more stable and generate very substantial revenue to pay for government services

44. hundres of billions cant be raised from that
sweden tried a FTT. they expected to raise 1.5B kroner a year but actually raised only 50M a year...
the problem is trading is done world wide.. a tax on us exchanges means trading is done overseas...

now what Id like to see is a short term trading profit tax.. any buy and sell of the same stock made in the same 1 minute period should be taxed 100% with all loses disallowed.. that will put en end to the high frequency tradng that has really hurt the economy
