Russia, China veto UN resolution condemning Syria
Source: Reuters

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Russia and China joined forces on Tuesday to veto a European-drafted U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Syria and hinting that it could face sanctions if it continues its crackdown on protesters.

The resolution received nine votes in favor and four abstentions. Russia and China cast the only votes against the resolution, which was drafted by France with the cooperation of Britain, Germany and Portugal.

1. Leave it to the countries that oppress their own...
to stand in support of another who is currently in the process of gunning down all who oppose it.

One day revolution will visit China.

3. Aljazeera: China and Russia veto UN resolution on Syria
Russia and China have joined forces to veto a European-drafted UN Security Council resolution condemning Syria and hinting that it could face sanctions if it continues its crackdown on protesters.

Western nations have been pressing for the adoption of the resolution condemning Syria's crackdown on anti-government protests. Chinese Ambassador Li Baodong said that Beijing opposed the idea of "interference in (Syria's) internal affairs."

“They (China and Russia) are willing to negotiate and they have their own draft which calls for secession of violence on all sides and for the sides to come together for a “Syrian-led process” to work on some sort of resolution to the crisis in Syria without outside intervention. It can be seen as a backlash to the UN resolution on Libya.

Meanwhile, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least nine people were killed on Tuesday in Syria.

Would be nice to see the resolution of China and Russia that "calls for secession of violence on all sides" (even if it were a toothless expression of sentiment). As it happened today even a "nasty letter" to Assad telling him that the continuing violence of the security forces against demonstrators couldn't pass the Security Council.

Kudos to the Syrian people for continuing these protests for so many months in the face of violent repression.

4. It was already clear they would do so

partly in order to avoid yet another loosely worded resolution , courtesy of the USA , as happened on the one on Libya. The USA's vowed intention to veto the Palestinian State issue at the UN may also not have helped.

edit to add :

The US ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, accused Moscow and Beijing of siding with a "regime of thugs" instead of peaceful demonstrators, and choosing to "prop up desperate, cruel dictators".

"The United States is outraged that this council has utterly failed to address an urgent moral challenge and a growing threat to regional peace and security," said Miss Rice, in an impassioned speech.

Susan Rice would do well to read up on the history of USA intervention in Latin America before using such statements as "prop up desperate, cruel dictators".

7. So true. Did you read this bit of hypocrisy from Rice?
I just about spat my coffee all over my monitor when I read this 'gem' this morning...

"The US ambassador, Susan Rice, said: "The courageous people of Syria can now clearly see who on this council supports their yearning for liberty and human rights, and who does not."

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/oct/05/russia-china-veto-syria-resolution

Yeah, and the entire world's gotten to see clearly over the past week or so who on the Security Council supports the Palestinian peoples yearning for liberty and human rights, and who does not. Either the US has amnesia and can't recall what it says more than a few days back, or just don't care that their attitudes are hypocritical in the extreme. I mean, the US uses its veto power more than all the other permanent members of the Security Council, yet gets all outraged when other permanent members use their veto...
