Orlando SentinalFormer Orlando Police Chief Val Demings earned an endorsement today from EMILY’s List in Florida’s 8th Congressional District.
That’s not a big surprise, because the political action committee promotes pro-choice Democratic women, and Demings is facing incumbent freshman Republican U.S. Rep. Dan Webster, who whittled away at abortion rights during his 28 years in the Florida Legislature.
Webster is strictly opposed to abortion, even for victims of rape or incest and when the mother’s health is at risk. In Tallahassee, he pushed through bills requiring parental consent and parental notification for abortions, and imposing penalties for doctors who perform so-called partial-birth abortions. He also sponsored a bill that would force women seeking an abortion to first undergo an ultrasound.
“Since taking office, Daniel Webster has consistently pushed a turn-back-the-clock agenda on women’s rights. Val Demings, a tough progressive candidate, is just the woman to stand up for Florida’s women and families and represent their interests in Congress. She has been a dedicated public servant, a pioneer for women in law enforcement and was a trailblazer in overseeing crime reduction during her tenure as police chief,” EMILY’s List president Stephanie Schriock said in a written statement.
