Actress Doris Belack dies at 85 Appeared in 'One Life to Live,' 'Tootsie'
Source: Variety

Actress Doris Belack, who appeared as the original Anna Wolek Craig on "One Life to Live" and recurred as a judge on "Law and Order" during a long career in television and film, died of natural causes in Manhattan on Tuesday, Oct. 4. She was 85.
Her husband, theatrical producer Philip Rose, to whom she was married for 65 years, died just four months ago.

In 1955 she performed with Sidney Poitier on the record "Poetry of the Negro," produced by Rose.

Belack appeared in an episode of "Treasury Men in Action" in 1951, but her TV career really got going with a 1963 appearance on "East Side/West Side," a guest role on two episodes of "The Patty Duke Show" and subsequent work in daytime soap operas. She recurred on "One Life to Live" from 1968-77 and also appeared on "The Edge of Night," "Another World" and "The Doctors."

The actress made her feature debut with a leading role in the 1977 family drama Looking Up," and she made an impression in 1982's "Tootsie," where her performance as a strong female leader echoed and reinforced some of the film's themes.

She was great! I remember her performances in the amazing ensemble cast of, "Tootsie" (as the strong female producer showing a woman can be in charge), and, the funny "What About Bob?" (where she is a psychiatrist that gets Richard Dreyfuss' character to explode, "I'M ON VACATION!"), among many others including her roles in Law & Order and other TV shows.

She even did voice work for video games a few years ago, "True Crime: New York City" and, her final credit, "Grand Theft Auto IV", three years ago!

I can remember my Mom watching that soap and seeing her on it... RIP MS. Belack

2. Oh, no! Anna Wolek!!!
I watched One Life to Live for years growing up and she was great! The sister of Larry and Vinnie. She also played Justice Ginsberg in some movie I saw, was trying to remember what it was just last week when I caught part of a Law & Order marathon. Makes me very sad. I liked her a lot. ;(

3. I liked her, too. She was Justice Ginsberg on an episode of Picket Fences, according to IMDB.
She was a great actress that I remember in several roles where she seemed to really be who she was portraying, and there's no greater compliment to pay an actor than that. Sigh, hate seeing the good ones go.

Hope you're well my friend...

4. You are so right! Thank you!
When I worked with CBS, Picket Fences was one of my shows, so that's where I saw her as Ginsberg! She was perfectly cast. I should have looked it up myself, but never got around to it... :spank:

Things have been rough and I sure miss you. Had a major death in the family and I think I have the flu. ;(

I hope that things are looking much better for you, my friend!

5. What a wonderful actress.
This is the first time I've ever actually thought of her as having any name other than the character she was portraying at any given moment. She was the superb all-too-rare kind of actor who never, ever seemed to be acting.

RIP Anna--I mean Doris.

6. 85? already? Where did the time go?
I am always impressed by good character actors, and liked her acting and roles.

Imagine, being married for 65 years...

8. Sorry to hear such a talented actress and amazing person is gone.
I recall her well through the years--was always glad to see her portraying the judge on L&O. Also remember her on OLTL. She made her mark and left wonderful memories! And 65 years of marriage. Wow...just a lovely thing!
