President Obama urges Americans to push for tax plan
Source: USA Today

President Obama stayed on the warpath Saturday morning against Republicans who oppose his $447 billion jobs plan, urging Americans to step up the pressure for passage.

In his weekly radio address, the president said if Republicans believe they have a better plan, "they should prove it." Thus far, however, Republicans have opposed more government spending that could stimulate the economy.

Obama repeated much of the message he delivered Thursday in a news conference, and that he has delivered for more than a month to friendly crowds around the country: that his plan has been judged effective by independent economists, and Republicans are blocking it just for political reasons.

(snip)
"Any senator out there who's thinking about voting against this jobs bill needs to explain why they would oppose something that we know would improve our economic situation," Obama said. "If the Republicans in Congress think they have a better plan for creating jobs right now, they should prove it."

WEEKLY ADDRESS: Growing the Economy with the American Jobs Act

WASHINGTON—In this week’s address, President Obama told the American people that the Senate will vote on the American Jobs Act next week, which independent economists have said will put Americans back to work, grow the economy, and give working people and small businesses a tax break. It is time for those who oppose the jobs act to explain why they are fighting against something that we know will improve the American economy, put teachers in classrooms, cops on the streets, and construction workers back to work rebuilding our roads and bridges. President Obama urged all Americans who support the American Jobs Act to call their Senators and tell them to put a stop to the gridlock in Washington and pass the jobs act next week.

1. "President Obama stayed on the warpath Saturday morning against Republicans..."
Likewise, "he is also struggling to get his own party in line, with some Democratic senators sceptical about his proposal to pay for the $447bn bill."

2. Been delivering to friendly crowds around the country
Fuck these people who write these stories. bush gave speeches to friendly crowds, O damn sure isn't that lucky. Hell just read the front page of GD and even on an otherwise sane democratic web site he can't even find a friendly crowd and thats HERE. Fuck them and their story telling.

3. Let's put cutting the military budget on the table.
Time to get rid of that sacred cow.

We won the cold war. It is time for us to cut back our military to pre WWII level and start reaping the peace benefit.

Unless you want there to be a "New American Century" where an all powerful American Empire lords it over the rest of the world. In that world we will be faced with enemies in every direction and will have to wage a perpetual "war on terror."

4. What I don't understand
We have a HUGE land mass, unlike Europe, we don't really need to import much, if we ran this country sensibly. Oil IS going to run out, that's a fact. Why they aren't getting America ready for it, is beyond me. If we invested even half of what we spend on the military into other forms of energy, we wouldn't need the middle east's oil in 10-25 years.

The fact is that as a country, we don't work together any more. I don't know if we could pull together like we did after the Pearl Harbor attack, and that's what needs to be done. We need to take care of ourselves before we go meddling into some other country.

5. I agree completely.
A mix of solar, wind, and save thorium based nuke power could make the USA completely independent. Bio-diesel based on algae grown in tanks on top of buildings in all the cities could make all our cars, buses, trucks, trains, and boats energy independent.

With an Apollo style crash mission we could switch over completely in less than 20 years.
