Speaker Fitzgerald to run for Senate

MADISON — The Republican speaker of the Wisconsin state Assembly, one of the key backers of Gov. Scott Walker's proposal curbing bargaining rights for public unions, announced tday that he is running for the U.S. Senate.

Jeff Fitzgerald said in an interview with The Associated Press that he believes his role in passing that law is his largest asset heading into the race. The proposal drew protests as large as 100,000 people and made Wisconsin the center of a national fight on union rights,

"It's the No. 1 thing I've got going for me. It's fresh in people's minds," Fitzgerald said. "We did it right in Wisconsin. ... There are conservatives who think Wisconsin is ground zero for the movement."

The Wisconsin Senate race, which is open due to the retirement of Democrat Herb Kohl, could help swing the balance of power in the Senate where Republicans need to pick up four seats to take control

I think that makes the difference in the answer to these questions...people don't run in a vacuum. It's like our President who would be losing reelection readily if there was anybody the GOP could run who isn't reviled but will probably crush all current GOP prospects handily.

solid record, well-liked, has name-recognition. She should win.

Even an assbag like Fitzgerald would cream a no-name though...it's the unfortunate breaks of politics above the level of municipal concerns. It's an insider's game. You can't win if you're new to the game or have never held a big-office.

9. Baldwin is much farther left than most of Wisconsin. That may play well in Madison,

but the rest of the state will be problematic. It will not be an easy win especially if Walker is not recalled.
