Swedish Medical Center to halt elective abortions if it allies with Catholic system
Source: Seattle Times

Swedish Medical Center, which last week announced a pending alliance with Providence Health & Services, a Catholic, not-for-profit organization, says it will stop performing elective abortions "out of respect for the affiliation" if the arrangement is approved.

Ed Boyle, Swedish spokesman, said the secular hospital system currently provides a limited number of elective abortions in its facilities. He said the hospital will take steps to assure "continued access to comprehensive women's reproductive health services through nearby community organizations dedicated to providing this care."

The hospital now provides a full range of birth-control services, including tubal ligations, and Boyle said if the proposed affiliation takes place, these procedures will continue to be available at Swedish facilities.

In the original announcement of the affiliation, both Swedish and Providence said the two organizations would keep their separate names and identities; the announcement said that Swedish would "remain a nonreligious organization."

Why stop there? Perhaps they could enter into an alliance with a Christian Science group and stop providing blood transfusions.

1. Actually, it's Jehovah Witnesses who object to blood transfusions
If they allied with the Christian Scientists they'd have to stop offering all medical care.

3. Lemme tell you what happened in Nashville,TN when Baptist merged
with Saint Thomas...OB/GYN groups renting office space from Baptist had language inserted into their contracts stating that the doctors wouldn't mention *birth control* to their patients. The doctor I talked to said that the hospital is turning a blind eye towards the doctors discussing BC with their patients, but that that could change quickly.

7. agreed, I clicked with alarm at first on this, thinking it some recent blow against my country here
that was just slipped through the Riksdag. Then I thought, no no, this could not happen here, upon which I saw it was just a USA sjukhus (hospital), not one here actually in Sweden. Faith restored, as usual here, and head shaking at the USA. Perhaps it will get sorted.

9. Yeah, what does that hospital have to do with Sweden?
I imagine it goes no deeper than the original founder of the hospital being a Swedish immigrant, or something. Maybe we can call it false advertising, and make them change the name. :)

10. There used to be a Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis
In fact, there used to be a lot of small hospitals that either closed or merged with other hospitals.
