Occupy Wall Street Protest Culminates With 6,000 in Times Square
Source: Business Week

Oct. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Occupy Wall Street demonstrations in New York City today culminated with a Times Square rally that drew thousands opposed to economic inequality, echoed by protests from London to Tokyo.

Participants in the month-old movement marched past a JPMorgan Chase & Co. branch early in the day to urge clients to close accounts. Twenty-four were arrested later at a Citigroup Inc. office, the police said, and about 6,000 gathered in Times Square, the organizers estimated.

Hong Kong, Sydney, Toronto and other cities also saw protests, which turned violent in Rome, in what organizers called a “global day of action against Wall Street greed.” Backers say they represent “the 99 percent,” a nod to Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz’s study showing the top 1 percent of Americans control 40 percent of U.S. wealth.

“The world will rise up as one and say, ‘We have had enough,’” Patrick Bruner, an Occupy Wall Street spokesman, said in an e-mail. A news release from the organization said there were demonstrations in 1,500 cities worldwide, including 100 in the U.S.

I bet there were even thousands more people protesting there.

Cheers to all who participated in today's OWS.

there were 200,000 in Rome and 500,000 in Madrid. This is a global phenomenon.

23. Culminate means that's the most it's ever going to get. I got news for the 1%
We're just getting started. 6000 obviously still has them sipping champaigne on the balcony. We need SERIOUS numbers. Let's keep building, heroes!

Whenever you're able, get onto the streets. Let's show them what a 100,000 person march looks like... then let's set a goal for 200,000 next.

24. Not at all. They'll save far more once the movement is killed - then they go after police pension
Easy peasy. Set us against each other for a few decades and we're so used to fighting over scraps that we forget what and where the real banquet is and what it looks like. We may even start to fall victim to Stockholm Syndrome and begin to love our oppressors (the 1%).

31. From "their" perspective: if they can squash these pesky demonstrators
Then they'll be free to continue looting the American Treasury and killing off the Unions, Teachers, Firemen, Police pensions are on the proposed chopping block.

Therefore, we cannot LET them defeat us. We must, as you said, multiply. For every 1 arrested, 10 should join the marchers the next day. This is our (the 99%) last chance to take back our government. If this movement fails then the Oligarchs will be moving in the tanks within weeks to "keep the peace" and "protect against radical elements" or whatever lie they feel like coming up with to justify a crackdown.

43. Anyone in the top 1% should be watching the growth of the "Occupy" movement very carefully
I am hoping that it will grow to a point where they will actually change their greedy and destructive ways, load the Democrats with campaign funding and get back to something resembling the first and 2nd New Deal of the 1930's era.

If they fail to modify their behavior then they are in for a very rude awakening one of these days... I give Capitalism at most 20 more years, then it's done forever. This turnip has no more blood to give and they've just killed the goose that lays the golden eggs in the death of the middle class and the "American Dream" (purposely in quotes).

The occupation had been fairly low-key until the 6 o’clock arrival of police in riot gear, on horses, motorcycles, and with shields. An occupier Jason Saadiin, 31, said, “It was so pedestrian and boring until the police showed up.” He was also at the scene and saw police pulling front-line protesters out of the crowd and beating them with batons, about 20 yards from where I was standing. “They embarrass themselves every time, they draw an invisible line through intimidation, and when people cross them, they hurt them.”

I was in NY, and the caravan of cop cars was unreal. I thought the President was in town or something. Then, I saw two lines of cops on foot following/surrounding the protestors.

Definitely more than 6,000.

22. but now what?
Edited on Sun Oct-16-11 12:37 AM by Adenoid_Hynkel
are we any closer to reform?
As we know from 2003, you can protest til the cows come home, but if there's no one in office who listens to you, the demonstration can end up being only symbolic.

I support the message and issues of OWS and have been down there a few times, but I am encountering what I think is a dangerous hesitancy among a lot of folks involved to organize at a political level. The 'don't vote, it only encourages them' attitude seems to be strong. And I can't say that I'm shocked, given the record of capitulation of Democratic leaders.

I'm by no means wanting these demonstrations to become a mindless arm of the Democratic campaign machine or anything like that, but am just asking what next?
How do we get results, and move beyond simply voicing discontent?

and small local banks. Do it on the 5th of November if you haven't shifted this all-important balance already.

That's just one thing among many others we can do together.

32. any important movement
takes time, like the woman's movement, or the civil right movement, they weren't built in a month. Let many more people get arrested, and all of them demand a trial, clog up the system, move your money, you, me and everyone take action, even in a small way. Did you read about the guy who occupied a grocery store? The problem in this country has been apathy. Civil disobedience is not the problem, lack of it is a problem. Support OWS, real democracy in action.

the 2012 campaign? It's not often that those assholes (American Nazi Party & Communist Party USA) find common ground - but this has apparently done it.
