(Keystone XL) Pipeline warning dismissed (U.S. State Department has ignored a warning-academic study
Source: Omaha World Herald

By Joe Duggan

LINCOLN — When a university professor with expertise in hazardous waste sounds alarms about a proposed oil pipeline in Nebraska, the federal agency overseeing the project should pay attention.

That's the view of State Sen. Ken Haar of Malcolm, who questions whether the U.S. State Department has ignored a warning that the Keystone XL pipeline could pollute Nebraska groundwater much worse than predicted.

One line from the government's environmental impact statement raised the senator's ire, he said, because it struck him as out of place in a serious analysis.

Referring to the professor's report, the government document said, "This is simply the latest case of opportunistic fear-mongering, dressed up as an academic study."

28. 4000 to build the line, maybe but once it's built, there go those jobs
and you're right "JOBS!" is the new meme we must jump to, even if those jobs are temporary for a year or so.

30. Stop saying that!
> Stop giving away our nation to the corpos.

The corporations have paid both Clinton and Obama a *lot* of money to
get your nation so there's no "giving away" involved at all, no sir!

You think politicians grow on trees or something?
That's some serious tax-deductible bribes "donations" we're talking about here!

it was relegated to a "deputy." You'd think the deputies would brief the head of the dept. but in her State Dept, I guess not.

Corrupt Corporatist Cronies.

Although not faintly accurate at the grass-roots level,
by the time they get near the top table there is truly
"not a dime’s worth of difference" between them ...

In May, environmental writer and activist Bill McKibben — pondering a simmering energy issue — asked a NASA scientist to calculate what it would mean for the Earth’s climate if Canada extracted all of the petroleum in its rich Alberta oil sands region.

The answer to McKibben’s query came a month later: It would push atmospheric carbon concentrations so high that humans would be unable to avert a climate disaster. “It is essentially game over,” wrote James E. Hansen, who heads NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies and is one of the nation’s leading voices against fossil fuel energy. SNIP

“I’ve always felt uncomfortable that the State Department is heading this process,” Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.), who at the time chaired the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said in an interview. snip

In mid-October, Clinton told an audience at San Francisco’s Commonwealth Club that she and others in the administration were “inclined” to give TransCanada the permit, adding, “We’re either going to be dependent on dirty oil from the Gulf or dirty oil from Canada.” more...

8. However, a little bit of good news - one of the folks testifying
Against the Keystone XL pipeline a week ago last Friday, she mentioned how some eighteen months ago, Malia had asked her Daddy if he had gotten the hole rsulting from the BP spill fixed yet.

These two kids might grow up with a conscience, and be there to remind their Daddy of what he needed to do for everyone's environment, rather than the many times he sold it out for the sake of his "buddies."

10. GOP & keystone
It's hard to believe, but if any GOP gets in, they will do even worse things. Its funny how all those Republicans in Nebraskap are concerned about the project, but wouldn't be too concerned if it were to he rerouted someplace else. Another NIMBY moment. If they are true Republicans, they shouldn't care about the environment:o)

It needs stopped, though, because it looks like that aquifer is a big deal. Polluting that would harm many people.

25. drinking water?
This is a big farming area. It is watered with center-pivot irrigation which comes from the Ogallala aquifier. If it is polluted, there goes a big portion of the nation's bread basket.

This is why it is so crucial to stop this pipeline.
