Hollande is French left's choice to oppose Sarkozy
Source: CNN

Paris (CNN) -- France's Socialist Party, which hasn't won the presidency in more than 20 years, picked longtime politician Francois Hollande to try to unseat incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy in next spring's elections.

Hollande defeated Martine Aubry in Sunday's runoff election. The former party leader thanked more than 2 million voters and pledged to bring new vitality to the country.

"I want to give young people a better life," he told CNN affiliate BFM-TV.

Hollande had 57.3% of the vote and Aubry 42.7% midway through the counting. Final results were to be posted by Monday.

3. The French far-right National Front was recently polling competitively with Sarkozy so
he might not even survive the first round in the presidential election next year.

Whichever conservative candidate ends up opposing the Socialists, let's hope he (Sarkozy) or she (Le Pen) loses and continues the recent resurgence of the left in Europe.

6. very good, he is a solid candidate, wants to hire 60 000 new teacher
he wants to increase taxes on the rich and wants to legalize the cultivation sale and possession of marijuana! he also supports gay marriage and is open to doing a coalition with the greens. the left has won every single election since sarkozy has become president and the socialists are polling well, a 60 to 40 spread to a 55 45 spread in favor of the socialists
