Wash. PostLAS VEGAS — In what has become a near-weekly ritual, the 2012 Republican presidential field came together on a debate stage Tuesday — this time, one that tested whether Herman Cain is a serious contender for the nomination or merely another evanescent phenom of this unsettled election season.
The former Godfather’s Pizza chief executive, who is the front-runner of the moment in opinion polls, entered the exchange here with his signature “9-9-9” tax overhaul plan under attack by his rivals and by an independent analysis that showed it would be a boon to the wealthy, while putting a significantly heavier burden on lower- and middle-income Americans.
Asked about the analysis of his plan — which would replace the current tax system with 9 percent levies on individual income, corporate earnings and purchases — Cain dismissed it as a “knee-jerk reaction” that was refuted by his campaign’s calculations.
“The reason that my plan — the reason that our plan is being attacked so much is because lobbyists, accountants, politicians, they don’t want to throw out the current tax code and put in something that’s simple and fair. They want to continue to be able to manipulate the American people with a 10-million-word mess.”
