Police find 6 kids in northeast Philadelphia basement case
Source: Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Police say they have taken six juveniles and four young adults into protective custody in connection with the discovery of four mentally disabled adults found locked in a northeast Philadelphia basement last weekend — and two of them might be children of one of the victims.

Police spokesman Lt. Raymond Evers they also found the 19-year-old niece of one of the defendants malnourished and with signs of abuse.

He says police scoured northeast Philadelphia for the juveniles after being alerted by Florida police. The 2- to 16-year-old juveniles and the 18- to 19-year-old adults are getting medical evaluations. Evers says police are looking into the possibility that the woman found locked in the basement may be the mother of the two youngest children, but tests are needed to determine that.

1. I wonder how many others are being stored in the basement while someone is living off their checks.

2. Oy! The pic of that basement!
:scared: WTH is wrong with people? You just never never know what goes on behind closed doors. I'm glad they got rescued. Oh goodness gracious.

3. "four mentally disabled adults authorities say were locked in a basement while a convicted murderer
stole their Social Security checks."

"Linda Ann Weston, 51, was charged Monday with kidnapping, false imprisonment and other offenses after her landlord stumbled on the four adults, all weak and malnourished, in a dank, foul-smelling boiler room on Saturday. Her bail was set at $2.5 million.

Also charged were Gregory Thomas, 47, whom Weston described as her boyfriend, and Eddie "the Rev. Ed" Wright, 50."

6. Strange, that page did come up, then when I tried to scroll down it jumped
to a page about a cyclopes shark. When I tried to go back I ended up with "Page not found" again.

8. Good God, this is so effed up.
These cases keep turning up (though the Austrians have a disturbing number given their population...the nation that birthed Hilter).

I really think that someone this immoral/evil is unredeemable. But I also think that prison isn't the answer. Penal colonies make more sense to me but there is nowhere to send people now. Too expensive and they get out again and do more bad shit to more people.

Let all the drug users out and maybe prison would make more sense to me.

The mentally disabled are our most vulnerable, if this is how they are treated by anyone what does that say about the whole society.

I just get overwhelmed by the horror that humans do. We are vicious monkeys and we are where we are because of it but if we don't evolve really soon we are done.

10. Considering that so many mentally disabled end up in our jails
It DOES say something about our society.

11. I've been expecting this. When they said she had credentials for apx 50 people
in the original news coverage, I figured there were more people stashed somewhere, or were already dead.
What a horrible, horrible thing to do.

14. THE STATES CUT Social Services STAFF and this is the result!
Why would anyone expect anything different?? Our govt (we the people) are supposed to protect our most vulnerable, but with the current republican drive to cut budgets and necessary personnel, the people suffer. The next thing we will hear, is that Social Services needs to be privatized to prevent these abuses and the taxpayers will get overcharged and under served once again,
