Bay Area counties cooperate with federal policy, but not Santa Clara
Source: Mercury News

As the U.S. announced Tuesday that it had deported a record 396,906 people in the last year, Santa Clara County supervisors enacted a sweeping new policy aimed at reducing the county's role in the federal deportation effort.

In a move that immigrant advocates characterized as the "most progressive" immigration-hold policy in the country, supervisors agreed that the county would cooperate with the U.S. government in deporting people only if they're serious felons -- and only if the federal government pays for the costs of detaining them.

In addition to saving the county money, the policy is designed to prevent deportation of illegal immigrants arrested for nonviolent crimes or minor misdemeanors. Those immigrants will now be released from custody before federal agents can grab them.

Community activists hailed it as a justifiable attack on the U.S. government's Secure Communities program, which requires local jailers to share the fingerprints of everyone booked with immigration officials.

But at least one anti-illegal-immigration crusader called the county's move "preposterous." He said the county was thumbing its nose at immigration officials who are working to protect communities.

If you are arrested and are a illegal alien, you should be deported. Case closed.

10. Sounds reasonable...
...but it was also one of the first statements Dennis Miller made as he began his nosedive into the right-wing punk that he is today.

3. This is BIG business! A certain sector of the US has great interesting keeping this going...
There are all sorts of forces at ICC and TSA and Homeland Security, that love this shit!

Deport! Deport! Deport! Why? It keeps them all employed...and getting pay checks...and keeps
their departments fully funded...and it feeds the fears of the Paranoid and WHITE. It's BIG, BIG business!
Just like all the private prisons that have taken over the jail systems...(Corrupt) Corrections Corporation
of America is SUCKING millions and millions and millons of tax payer dollars, into their for-profit company.

Yes, many are here "illegally" and there are some bad apples in the bunch...but what is the break
down of deportees, by ETHNICITY? How does that break down????

I'll just betcha that the vast majority is from Latin America and are low wage worker types.

What about persons from Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa, South America? How many are here
illegally AND how many have been deported?

Just ask'n!

4. Are you suggesting we should have open borders with Mexico?
There has to be rules concerning immigration. Every country I know of has policies in place. What the conversation should be about is real ideas to tame the drug trade in Mexico and creating opportunities for people that live there. Its not nice to see families torn apart or communities broken. I have family members deported (not Mexico but Afghanistan) and we dealt with it as a family and there was no blame on the govt. My father was deported out of the Philippines. I am no stranger to the "Real Life" of deportees and the struggle. I have empathy for those folks.

6. Bravo. I have to call my reps in the morning.
Those thugs at ICE are completely out of control. Anything that makes their jobs harder is fine with me.

8. One-third of Santa Clara County residents are foreign-born
most are here legally, of course, but that doesn't necessarily protect them from the S-Comm dragnet. One woman who had recently become naturalized was picked up on a DUI -- and was flabbergasted to find out she couldn't be released because ICE had a hold on her! Turns out they hadn't updated their database. :eyes:
