Ohio Governor John Kasich signs order on exotic animals
Source: Newsnet5.com

Posted: 2:03 PM

COLUMBUS, Ohio -

In the wake of the exotic animal escape this week in Zanesville, Ohio Gov. John Kasich signed an executive order on wild animals Friday afternoon.

During Tuesday night and most of the day on Wednesday, Muskingum County authorities, with the help of animals experts, tracked down and killed nearly 50 animals. The Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz said the owner of the exotic animal farm, Terry Thompson, freed the animals before killing himself.

Ohio has some of the weakest exotic animal laws in the country. The Humane Society of the United States criticized the governor for allowed a ban on buying and selling the animals to expire in April.

"Today, I am able to sign an executive order that will have teeth," Kasich said. The order puts a moratorium on exotic animal auctions. The governor said one man, who holds exotic animal auctions in Ohio, has agreed to stop the auctions for the next 90 days while the state reviews the issue.

2. Gov.Strickland had put a temporary ban on trading exotic animals before he left office.

This incoming asshat Governor overturned the ban, and now he's "doing the right thing"... shame on him.

12. what would Strickland do?
Kashich should ask that question every time he has to make a decisionh. O|hio voters should keep reminding him.

28. The pressure must have been HUGE.
When the day comes that Kasich's obituary is published, I hope to read that he died when a stuffed tiger fell on him.

4. Talk about locking the barn door after the horses have escaped.
I feel Kasich should have some liability in this whole snafu.

It was locking the barn door after assisting the horse thieves by first unlocking the barn door.

7. "order that will have teeth"
Edited on Fri Oct-21-11 02:29 PM by Liberalynn
I enjoy humor as much as the next person but using such a disgusting pun in such a tragic situation, shows a severe lack of class and sensitivity but that's what one expects from a Rethug.

I'm one who feels that the police had no choice but to put down the animals to end the danger to the public but still it was saddening and horrible.

Laws should have been written and enforced much sooner than this to protect both the human population and the animals.

8. Barn doors and escaped animals.
As noted, he had earlier refused to continue a previous ban on possession of exotic animals by felons -- the perpetrator had earlier been convicted of animal cruelty.

So, he'd earlier refused to keep the barn door closed and is now shocked that something got out.

Typical Rethug.

http://banohiodogauctions.com/

Nothing new as you can see at the above link. However, now Ohio is in the spotlight and they are looking like the incompetent people that they are. They don't care in reality. They are embarrassed now hence this two-bit "Executive Order" for a whole 90 days.

Big damn deal!

Teeth? Where?

27. I live in the town where
the endangered and exotic animal were murdered. I lived in KY a few years back and everyone always said, 'Thank God for Mississippi' so KY would not be on the bottom of all the lists.

Now we can say, 'Thank God for Dumbfuckistan, the former state of Ohio.' I live here and know. No one takes responsibility. No one truly wants to solve a problem. Lazy. Stupid. Bureaucrats.

This sheriff had to know that this is how this situation would play out....he's been going out to this farm for YEARS and nothing done but filing out reports. No one wanted to deal with these big animals. No one.

I'm ashamed to live here.

When I grew up in Ohio (years ago), it was known for its great educational system. Now it's known as Dumbfuckistan.

31. well don't take it personally
I know of a great animal rights person in Ohio and this person is doing everything a person can do to try to change things.

It is great that there are people like this person -- a true patriot!

Lets hope this does bring change.

However, I cannot blame you for feeling bad considering what has occurred. :(

33. I absolutely
love animals. I'd much prefer to stay home w/ pets than go to a restaurant on Friday or Saturday night....any night for that matter.

This was very upsetting to me. I had just visited The Wilds the Sunday before this massacre occurred. And the photos of all the slain endangered animals are etched into my brain.

Humans haven't done a damn thing for Mother Nature except brutalize her.

I'm glad your friend is working to better our treatment of Mother Nature.

No luck period. There are also a lot of puppy mills in Ohio. They MUST protect those too.

All of these types of activities go hand in hand with one another.

20. that little mother fucker let Strickland's ban expire ....
... and then said or had a press release that he "didn't want to stifle free enterprise" last March or April.

I know this because I live in Columbus, OH and remember thinking Kasich's actions w/ horror. Jack Hanna
might lie to cover your ass John, but the truth is out there.

39. That is not true. Jack Hanna really does care about ......
..... animals. I have met the man and know people who have worked w/ and for him.

Although Jack will be the first to admit that he is not an expert in biology, ecology, and or
animal behavior ..... he is the "face" of the Columbus Zoo and at that job he has been very
effective.

Jack's backing of Kasich has more to do w/ the politics of the real and a lot less to do w/
if he is a republican or democrat. The man has given hundreds of thousands of HIS $s to
different charities and thousands of hours of his own time to help out many many many
worth while projects.

21. Small consolation to the 49 animals that were killed
in this case.

18 Tigers--RARE tigers were killed, plus lions, leopards, bears, cougars. ... I find myself totally sick to my stomach over the loss of these animals.

And, in truth, it wasn't the people who killed them--it was the fact that these animals could be bought and sold, or captured and allowed to be displayed like objects in a museum that are the true culprits. Humans around the world need to smarten up and gain some kind of wisdom before all the animals are gone from the face of the planet, because we lose, as a species, any kind of purpose if we lose our humanity and our compassion for others.

Why couldn't they have been lured and penned with food?

I've always enjoyed Jack Hanna. But I don't buy a word of his excuses for murdering those animals. They fucking panicked.

37. There are always going to be excuses
for drastic actions, and as we all know, there will be a hush up for a long time until the truth leaks out, one thing at a time.

The worst enemy of the people is secrecy. Until we learn the truth, and know what IS the truth, we will never really be a free or powerful nation. But there are a lot of people who don't want the truth to be known.

I think, though, that I would have rather had that few hours of freedom only to be killed, than live my whole life in a cage.
