'Survivor' star running for Indiana governor
Source: Politico

Hoosiers, get ready to see some tie-dye on the campaign trail. On Saturday, “Survivor” star Rupert Boneham announced that he’s leaping into the race for governor of Indiana.

The Indianapolis Star reported that Boneham’s formal announcement was made very informally at a “public pizza party and free tie-dye workshop” hosted by the bearded Boneham and his family.

Seeking the Libertarian Party's nomination for governor, the Star noted that on Saturday, the man who usually sports a rainbow of colors, was wearing “a white shirt, black ribbed corduroy sport jacket and black slacks.” "I still like a tie-dye tank top and shorts, ya know, but I want people to see me serious," he told the paper.

If the Libertarian Party spent half the time building a grassroots party structure at the local level that it does digging up celebrity candidates to keeps its ballot status, it might be able to accomplish something.

1. I'd vote for him. Of course, as we all know, only Republicans
can be entertainment celebrities and also taken seriously as political candidates. :eyes:

3. He has already established a name for himself in Indianapolis
He has taken his $1 million winnings and contributed to a variety of endeavors in the Indianapolis area. He already has established a name for himself outside of Survivor.

Now, let's see if a Libertarian can compete between the Democratic and Republican juggernauts.

7. I live in Indiana and...
...the Democratic Party in THIS state could hardly be called a "juggernaut".

6. Having never seen or heard of him before this, I have to ask why?
I'm just curious. Obviously I don't react well to the "libertarian" label, but I really don't know a damn thing about the guy. Why would you "have" to vote for him?

9. See if you can find and watch the season of Survivor he was on.
I forget whether it was season 3 or 4. From interviews and the backstory they give on the contestants, it became clear he was a stand-up guy, working with disadvantaged kids and so on. And from other comments on this thread it looks like he's used a good chunk of his winnings to help his community.

a few years ago and i would always see a car covered in Ron Paul crap parked on the sidewalk. the place i worked was next to a yoga place. one day i saw the guy who got out of the car and it was one of the yoga instructors.

15. Maybe he's runnning as a libertarian because he could never break into the two party system?
I think we need more information before assuming he's a Ron Paul free market nutjob. It's a hell of a lot easier to run as a third party candidate - maybe he's not completely nuts. I have no idea one way or another. It's just a thought.

He seemed like a real jerk on survivor, yet he was made out to be easy going.

17. FWIW - Rupert's first action on his first Survivor episode...
...was to steal all the supplies of the other team.

Shouldn't he be running for the Republican nomination?
