United, Continental, Delta raise fares again
Source: AP

Monday, October 24, 2011, 7:41 PM

DALLAS -- The nation's biggest airlines are raising their fares again.

United, Continental and Delta added up to $5 each way to ticket prices for many flights within the U.S. It's the second hike in a week after more than two months when base fares were largely unchanged.

Airlines have tried to raise prices about 20 times this year, and about half the hikes have stuck. Airlines often roll back price increases if key competitors don't match them.

J.P. Morgan analyst Jamie Baker said he would be surprised to see low-fare carriers such as Southwest Airlines Co. match the increases, which means there's a strong chance the latest hikes will be rolled back.

2. Airlines are going to reduce 600K seats for holidays to increase profit.
The airlines goal is to fly every plane fully loaded.

I guess I can't blame them.. but it is miserable for passengers.

Also, the airlines have announced a $40 increase for each airline ticket over the holidays.,

A $40 increase is very severe. Many people do not have this much cushion in their budget.

I see many people moving over to AMTRAK and Bus travel this holiday for distances less than 600 miles.

3. Don't even think about Delta.
I was going to fly up to DC, from Florida, for the occupation on Oct. 5th. On the 4th, I got a call that my father was hospitalized, and in ICU for a possible stroke in South Carolina.

Delta hit me with a "change" fee of $200 on a round trip fare of $289, for no other reason than they can. They told me I could have the $89 credit for use on a future flight within one year. I told them where they could stick their (my) $89, that I would rather walk somewhere before ever considering booking another flight with them.

And, I just booked a flight for my step-son to fly down from Cleveland for Thanksgiving. Delta was cheaper, but I paid the higher fare to a non-thief airline.

4. I looked at fares for Christmas yesterday, didn't book (my bad), looked
again today and everything was about $20 more, so I bought, fearing another day would simply bring another $20 hike.
