Obama looks to bypass Congress with help for homeowners, students
Source: Christian Science Monitor

After the Senate blocked consideration last week of Mr. Obama’s jobs proposal, the administration has moved to Plan B: bypass Congress and enact change via executive-branch measures. On Monday, the federal government announced new rules for some “underwater” homeowners, to make them eligible for lower interest rates.

The president will discuss the new program in a speech in Las Vegas Monday at 5:30 p.m., Eastern time. Nevada has both the highest unemployment (13.4 percent) and foreclosure rates in the United States, and it’s a crucial swing state in next year’s presidential election.

In the “We can’t wait” initiative, the administration is “taking and highlighting a series of executive actions to show that we’re doing everything we can do to get the economy moving to help middle-class families and create jobs,” said Dan Pfeiffer, White House communications director, in a call with reporters.

At the same time, Mr. Pfeiffer said, the administration will continue to pressure congressional Republicans to pass the president’s $447 billion jobs bill, the American Jobs Act, either in its entirety or piece by piece.

I think Republicans may argue that the American people spoke forcefully in 2010 to reject calls for regulation and to instead demand lower taxes for the rich, er job creators, and less regulation and unions. Indeed, Darrell Issa and the House Republicans will probably call this effort to help home owners and students an impeachment worthy effort to bypass Congress and the will of the American people. Afterall, if the American people did not want tax cuts for the rich, less regulation, and less unions, why would they elect Republicans and Tea Partiers to the House?

Indeed, if you watch Fox News enough, you may even start to believe these RW talking points.

2. Romney - “Don’t try and stop the foreclosure process, let it run its course and hit the bottom"
Edited on Mon Oct-24-11 10:28 PM by TomCADem
The interesting thing is that the corporate media continues to try to run interference for Republicans by pushing the narrative that Republicans really aren't that conservative, and that when elected as President, they will actually be quite moderate sort of like Bush's compassionate conservativism.

http://ordinary-gentlemen.com/eliasisquith/2011/10/19/romney-let-the-housing-market-run-its-course-and-hit-the-bottom/

For those not able or inclined to watch the video, this was what Mitt Romney had to say yesterday to the editorial board of the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

As to what to do for the housing industry specifically, are there things that you could do to encourage housing? One is: Don’t try and stop the foreclosure process. Let it run its course and hit the bottom. Allow investors to buy homes, put renters in them, fix the homes up and let it turn around and come back up. The Obama administration has slow-walked the foreclosure process that has long existed, and as a result we still have a foreclosure overhang.

4. Congressional Republicans poll far worse than Obama
I think that people generally blame the Republicans for wrecking havoc, and blame Obama for using that as an excuse to triangulate pretty far right.

5. Obama lets the banks off light with his plan (no way should..
Edited on Mon Oct-24-11 11:03 PM by mvd
bank liability be reduced and the debts not addressed while saddling the taxpayers), but I suppose it's better than no action. That's why I'm still voting for Obama. Though if I was a politician, I'd have a NO foreclosures stance.

12. I heard that shit from my own kids-and told them
even if you don't agree with what he has/hasn't done, you STILL need to VOTE, and vote for POTUS.

People are starting to find out what is going on. Thanks to the OWS..We need to keep a Dem. in the WH and get our statehouses back.

Those are where the fascists lay the groundwork for their evil agenda-'states rights' crap . As a Wi. resident I have witnessed firsthand the damage that is done when

people sit out elections.

This buys us TIME-and thats what we need for people to discover what their game is. I sure as HELL don't want to hand over our government

to those greedy bastards that easily.

13. Yes, but I sure hope you don't think Republicans are the only problem and Democrats are the only
solution, especially at the level of POTUS.

In the last 20 years, we've had eight years of Clinton, eight of Dummya and 2+ years of Obama; and we are to the right of Reagan

10. Blame Democrats, Give Republicans A Free Pass...
...on Democratic Underground no less. Amazing that despite the extreme actions of congressional Republicans, some folks go out of their way to argue that there is no difference between the parties.

17. When we have a Dem president attacking Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid .....
and a Dem president making back room deals with Big Pharma and private H/C

industry -- and Koch Bros. DLC Rahm Emmanuel "crowing" about it and how grateful

business should be that Obama "preserved the private health care industry" --

which tramped MEDICARE4ALL -- then you tend to have DU'ers who don't have amnesia.

Again -- if the GOP can run EVERYTHING while simply being one Liebeemann vote ahead --

or by simply controlling the HOUSE -- then let's go for it!!

I'd love to see it happen.

The extremes we are suffering are from Koch Bros. funded DLC control over the Dem Party

over the last 20 and more years -- and the current Third Way control of the party --

which have only served in the past to move the party to the right, as Third Way is also

doing. If you need info on this, let me know!

Maybe some of this info is unfamiliar to you -- ?

Heree's Koch Bros. DLC Rahm Emmanuel "crowing" on why business leaders should be GRATEFUL

to Obama -- !!

”In a Thursday interview, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel argued that rather than recoiling against Obama, business leaders should be grateful for his support on at least a half-dozen counts: his advocacy of greater international trade and education nationalize banks during the financial meltdown; the rescue of the automobile industry; the fact that the overhaul of health care preserved the private delivery system; the fact that billions in the stimulus package benefited business with lucrative new contracts, and that financial regulation reform will take away the uncertainty that existed with a broken, pre-crash regulatory apparatus.

http://dyn.politico.com/printstory.cfm?uuid=B2F85DDF-18...

the fact that the overhaul of health care preserved the private delivery system;

If you need more info on the back room deals as reported by the NY Times, just let me know.

21. School House Rock Explained The Process for Passing A Bill
I know that there is a popular talking point that the Republicans only control the House so why can't President Obama simply pass legislation over their objections. Well, besides the Republicans in the Senate who are abusing the filibuster, the fact remains that you need the House to do something. Checks and balances. It is easy stall action. Not so easy to make things happen and in this case, the Republicans that the American people elected to the House are refusing to take any action:

Obama will head fake to the left right up until the election..
