Richmond Tea party says city gives Occupy Richmond preferential treatment (want refund)
Source: Richmond Times-Dispatch

The group is asking Jones to refund the charges it has incurred over the past three years for holding its annual Tax Day rally at the plaza, saying that the Occupy Wall Street offshoot group is using the park illegally and free of charge.

In planning for the Tax Day rallies, the tea party group has scheduled the events weeks in advance to obtain permits, allow police to schedule staffing at organizers' expense, pay for use of the park and arrange numerous other details.

"The City of Richmond is allowing Occupy Richmond to blatantly break the law day after day while forcing other groups to strictly comply," the press release said. "One of the basic principles of our country is that laws should be applied equally. It seems that our city officials have decided that this principle doesn't apply to the Occupiers."

Claiming that the city is "punishing us for being law-abiding citizens and rewarding the Occupiers for ignoring the law," the tea party group has sent an invoice to Jones' office for the three years worth of Tax Day rally expenses.

Besides holding an astroturf rally planned for a while is not the same as a grassroots protest. Apples and oranges. Have the Kochs pay the bill....

10. yeah, well,...
that's the difference between a REAL protest movement and the nonsense the TP has been up to the last 3 years...REAL protesters don't risk getting a bill for park rental, they risk paying an arrest fine.
And now all you Tea-Partiers understand the problem with things like "Designated Protest Areas".

"One of the basic principles of our country is that laws should be applied equally..."-----If these tools understood what that ACTUALLY meant or believed it for one iota of time, they would be out there WITH the Occupiers, not bitching about the fact THEIR little movement turned out to be a serious matter ONLY to those who were paid to say so.
Maybe they can get Eric Cantor to cry about it FOR them the next time he's on the news, that way they don't have to do even THAT little bit of work themselves...
Fuck these people, I say they are going to lose the next go-round, and I say they KNOW its coming, and they know they don't have any way to stop it.

Peace and Solidarity,

12. Exactly - not enforcing the laws (or changing them due to $$$) is what caused this
AND what OWS is saying. The Tea Baggers have been lead around by their noses so much that they can't smell the BS anymore. Hell all Cain is doing is selling them books. He has no staff anywhere (no costs) and he is still making paid motivational speeches.

18. Hate to say it, but these baggers are right...
If the baggers have been forced to pay for permits, use of the park, legal arrangements, etc, they are quite correct in demanding a refund if Occupy Richmond is allowed to protest in the same spot for free. City can not play favorites when it comes to how they treat protests, and it looks to me like they will need to refund the baggers for all 3 years (and every other protest group that paid all the appropriate fees). It's either that or the baggers will go to court and they will either win or it will force Richmond to require the exact same thing from Occupy Richmond. I'd rather Richmond just refund the fees.

Constitution-loving, strict constructionist 'Baggers BELIEVED the city offices when the City offices told them they needed a PERMIT to exercise their Rights to Freedom of Speech and Assembly...If I were a "Bagger, my response would have been "Yeah, I kinda think NOT, go fuck yourself, I'll be in the park and if you want to arrest me, you can come on over."
The reason they believed this shit in the first place is because the political leaders of the Cons. have spent the better part of 30 years brainwashing them all into thinking that an Authoritarian State isn't REALLY exactly that, because it's usually working on their behalf (and against the dirty liburl hippies of the world) and now they're pissed to find out that THAT knife has 2 edges on it, and can cut both ways.

I agree with you that the city of Richmond fleeced them (the City, as a Govt. agency should actually be looking out for, and helping them exercise their Rights) and so should make every effort to return the money, but as far as them bitching about the unfairness of the PRINCIPAL, well, they got fleeced because they were too stupid to know better, despite their unending claims of "Divine Constitutional Knowledge".

Arguments to the contrary are welcome, as always=)
