Oakland Mayor Jean Quan Says She Will Minimize Police Presence And That She Supports The Movement | After the first heavy-handed police crackdown on demonstrators in Oakland, Mayor Jean Quan wrote a statement on her Facebook page praising police for closing down the Occupy Oakland protest encampment. Now, facing anger from across the world, Quan is backing down on her aggressive language and even says that she supports the goals of the movement. She is committing to minimize police presence in the plaza and “build a community effort to improve communications and dialogue with the demonstrators.” View her full statement:

2. That just means she has another plan. They'll probably poison the occupiers. Or plant drugs.
Or just take them away and when everyone asks, "What happened to the occupiers?" they'll say, "I dunno."

I'm, of course, glad she said the police won't be sigged on the occupiers, but I trust her word like I trust a Republic prez candy's word.

18. In Boston, graffiti and a drug bust followed the Mayor's (belated) declaration of support.
Edited on Thu Oct-27-11 12:10 PM by No Elephants
Real? Not real? Who knows?

Yesterday. inspectors were there, also for health and safety reasons.

Ironically, the closeness of the tents to each other was cited. They have no choice. Menino has confined them to such a small area, there is not even enough room for one more tent.

Lord, how I hope he loses next time! But, he probably won't.

4. LOL, Menino also claimed support for the movement after Boston Police beat up a vet.
Edited on Thu Oct-27-11 10:46 AM by No Elephants
The day before, Menino had announced that the occupiers would not be welcome to stay indefinitely.

In the wee hours of the night, police raided the area, roughting up a member of Veteran's for peace. A Vietnam vet, too, IIRC, so not a young man. It hit TV and You Tube very fast.

Soon, Menino was expressing his support for the movement and, get this, calling on Congress to hold hearings and calling on--wait for it--businesses to create equity.

Apparently, it never entered his mind that the Mayor of a city like Boston might do something himself.

17. Yes. Remember when Bloomberg said OWS could stay indefinitely?
Edited on Thu Oct-27-11 11:52 AM by RufusTFirefly
The crackdown started within 24 hours after that announcement -- based on the false pretense of needing to clear the park for "cleaning."
Look for Quan to do something similarly underhanded.
The good news for our side is that these betrayals tend to backfire. Big time.

28. I didn't realize she was of Chinese decent.
Perhaps she is following the book as they do things in China by violently beating ANY--and I mean ANY form of protest. Then you hide you in a prison that is nowhere near where you live so family can't find you. She should be ashamed of herself. She should know what others in China have endured protesting Chinese policy. As a citizen--I would assume she would respect what this country has stood for--now that she can also speak out against any form of injustice. That doesn't happen in China.

Is that how they do things in Livermore? Would you imply that Menino cracked down in Boston because "that's how they do things in Italy"?

14. So she BLOWS 200 million dollars
On Onenight of nothing and she wants to keep her job? Think aobut how much money that cot the city. At least 25 different jusristicions were involved. CHP, Vacaville etc.

Then there are going to be so many suits that the cost, tot he taxpayers, will be astronomical. The ACLU and the American Attorneys Guild are chomping at the bit to get this to the Surpeme court. Just for civil rights violations.

Then there is the vet who undoubtedly will be well compensated for his injurieds. And any others that were harmed by the police. And had theri rights violated.

Thent here is the cost of having that many people arrested. Lots of money there when you think about it. Courts,, probation, recidivism etc...

36. Her first instinct was to sell out the protestors. We now have
her number. Apparently she's been corrupted by all the power, money, and glory she's received since becoming mayor. Maybe she will go down in history as the one who fired the first shot--heard 'round the world--that started the Second American Revolution. You go girl!!!

40. That's what I was thinking, too. Andrew Cuomo, current NYS
governor, tried to stop "Occupy Albany" within the last few days, and the Albany Country District Attorney said he would not prosecute any arrests that the police made there. Then the mayor of the City of Albany joined the D.A. and Cuomo's plan was not carried out. In case you don't know of Andrew Cuomo, not to be confused with his well loved and respected liberal/progressive father Mario (a former three-term governor of NYS), Andrew is a Blue Dog democrat or a DINO. He may prove to be a dyed in the wool Republican Conservative who infiltrated the Dems. It is a proven way to destroy your opposition. This I learned first hand from a very smart political strategist many years ago. Andrew may not be that, but he is at least infected with the anti-progressive gene in my opinion. Mr. Cuomo, the younger, is not keeping the friends he made prior to revealing his true nature. I believe that NYS residents are pretty quick on the uptake. He should start looking for a lobbying job now.
