Gaddafi killer faces prosecution, says interim Libyan government
Source: The Guardian

Libya's interim government says it will prosecute anyone found responsible for the death of Muammar Gaddafi after his capture, in a backdown from its earlier insistence that the dictator had been killed by crossfire.

The change in position comes after a week of sustained criticism directed at the captors of the Libyan leader who used their camera phones to chronicle his death. The footage, including images of a wounded Gaddafi being sodomised with what looked like a bayonet, caused widespread revulsion outside the country.

Abdel Hafiz Ghoga, deputy chief of the National Transitional Council, said attempts would be made to bring to justice anyone proven to have fired the shot to the head that killed Gaddafi.

"With regards to Gaddafi, we do not wait for anybody to tell us," he told the al-Arabiya satellite channel. "We had already launched an investigation. We have issued a code of ethics in handling of prisoners of war. I am sure that was an individual act and not an act of revolutionaries or the national army. Whoever is responsible for that will be judged and given a fair trial."

1. Good. Other countries should not have a right to act like the United States.

2. They know exactly who was involved in this because in the early moments
several witnesses bragged about it to the press.

3. This goes a long way toward assuaging doubts about the interim government
Encouraging that they respect the rule of law. Other regimes around the world could learn by their example. They would have been better off if Gaddafi had been kept alive to stand trial, but since he didn't, they can show that his murder wasn't sanctioned in official quarters.

9. There would be plenty of people who know who did it,
but I doubt they'd give him up to the authorities. He's a revolutionary hero right now.

Best thing now for the interim government is to focus on getting Saif and making sure the same thing doesn't happen to him.
