(Canada) Immigration minister plans marriage fraud crackdown
Source: CBC

The federal government is planning to get tough with people who are in marriages of convenience to gain Canadian citizenship, Immigration Minister Jason Kenney says.

The new rules, expected to be introduced later this year, would include a conditional period to ensure marriages are real to prevent citizenships being handed out fraudulently.

(...)

Canada is also expected to adopt practices already in place in the United States and Australia where couples must prove they have lived together for a defined period before the applicant becomes a permanent resident.

2. Had some experience with that in our family. The immigration people
even made him go home for a year while they investigated the marriage. At the time we did not even know that this is one way that foreign students get to stay in the country. Later we found a whole group of citizens who had been part of this practice.

First I will say that I do not blame the foreign students. After the marriages in our family we visited their homes in their countries. Believe me they understand real poverty and there is a reason they do not want to go back. If we were in that situation we would do anything to get out of it.

And I will say that we do not regret that it happened even though the marriage ended up a sham. I have three beautiful nieces and three beautiful great-grand nieces from it. But my sister was deeply hurt when her marriage fell to pieces and that I could do without.

I cannot imagine what they are going to do to stop it. Will be interesting to watch them try.

5. CBC's Passionate Eye documentary series had a full episode about this
True Love or Marriage Fraud?

What’s the dirty little secret about spousal immigration sponsorships in Canada? It’s that many Canadians are being duped into marriage, not for love, but for Canadian residency. And even if the fraud is discovered, the victims have little real power to get their fraudulent spouses deported from Canada — plus they’re financially responsible for them for three years...
