N. Korea Crash Kills Up to 3,000
SEOUL, South Korea - Two fuel trains collided at a North Korean railroad station near the Chinese border Thursday, igniting a deafening explosion that rained debris for more than 10 miles around, South Korean media reported. One television channel said as many as 3,000 people might have been killed or injured.

The secretive communist government in Pyongyang declared an emergency while cutting off international telephone lines to prevent details of the crash from leaking out, South Korea (news - web sites)'s Yonhap news agency reported.

The North Korean leader, Kim Jong Il, had quietly passed by rail through the station as he returned from China before dawn some nine hours earlier. It was not clear what caused the crash, or if it was related to Kim's journey.

6. Ain't gonna happen.
everything in the original article was based on a report from a Korean Yonhap reporter in Beijing. He was talking to Chinese relatives in the border towns who had relatives in Korea, and that's the sum of all the information anyone's got. Not real great. Someone on the other thread in LBN looked up the USGS earthquake maps, and found that whatever the boom was, it wasn't a nuke, which would've registered on seismographs. Since the phone lines were unplugged, there won't be any more information getting out.

7. Okay, now, that's really weird.
I went to the article you got that from, and it credits a Yonhap photographer (s. Korean tv news consortium). How the blazes did they get a photograph??????

A defence ministry official told Yonhap they had yet to confirm "the cause of the incident, the kind of explosion and how many died".

The entire area "was turned into ruins comparable to the aftermath of a massive bombing," Yonhap said, quoting witnesses.

North Korean authorities were investigating the cause of the accident, Yonhap said.
