Gingrich criticizes U.S. Mid-East policy
Source: CBS News

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said Saturday that the "grotesque failure" of current U.S. policy in the Middle East may have resulted in an "anti-Christian spring."

The former speaker of the House claimed that the number of Christians in Iraq fell from 1.2 million to 500,000 since the American invasion in 2003, and that Christianity is under assault elsewhere in the region.

"This is why the current strategy in the Middle East is such a total grotesque failure," Gingrich told about 200 people gathered at the Chesterfield Inn. "People say, 'Oh, isn't this great, we're having an Arab spring.' Well, I don't know, I think we may in fact be having an anti-Christian spring. I think people should take this pretty soberly."

Gingrich was referring to the recent domino-effect uprisings that are challenging longtime autocratic regimes in the Middle East, which has become known as the Arab spring. As president, Gingrich said, "I would actively try to defend religious liberty across the planet, including in Egypt and Iraq."

So, there you have it. Obama failure to invade Libya, Egypt, and Iran, and his withdrawal from Iraq means that the U.S. can't protect its oil interests, er, Christians seeking to practice their religion in these areas. That's the ticket. It is not about freedom any more. Its about the Crusades.

1. In my opinion the US sticking their nose into the Middle-East
for the last 58 years might have a lot to do with the trouble we find ourselves in right now

2. Sounds Like Gingrich is Pro-Gaddafi And Pro-Mubarak
Even Pro-Saddam. At least he is not also Pro-bin Laden -- though he did credit Bush for killing him. What a windbag Gingrich is.

3. Who? Is this someone to whose views about foreign policy I (and media) should be paying
attention?

Or is this just another Republican grifter pretending to run for office to sell books and increase speaking fees?

4. Gingrich is a complete piece of sh*t
He's gonna blame Obama and the Arab spring for the persecution of the Iraqi Christians is complete hypocrisy. One of the oldest christian communities in the world was abandoned by the US when Mouri al-Maliki became leader of Iraq.

Having re-read the bible in my 30's without the "benefit" of "learned clergy" to interpret it for me I concluded I could not worship the blood thirsty god of Abraham. Having said that, I support others natural right to worship their god(s).

I live in southern Missouri, in the midst of the bible belt. In 2006 I did my own little survey of a couple of dozen right wing evangelical churches to see if any of them were sponsoring any Iraqi christian families. Of course none were. They love to talk about the imaginary "war on Christians" here in the US but they're more than willing to abandon their fellow Christians where there truly is one.

The Christians of Iraq survived 2000 years thru Muslim and Mongol invasions but they may not survive the evangelical US invasion.

So,Newt, enjoy the 6th circle of Hell (at least according to Dante). You'll have plenty of republican company.

Mark Twain: "It's not the parts of the bible I don't understand that bother me. It's the parts I do understand."

6. I thought Newt's main criteria for a religion was
that the religion approved of adultery and multiple wives.
