Worker death shuts down Stillwater mine in Mont.

A precious-metals mine operated by Stillwater Mining in central Montana was shut down Tuesday as investigators probed the death of a worker who was driving a piece of equipment 1,200 feet underground, the Associated Press reports. An official with the Mine Safety and Health Administration told the wire service that the victim died Monday as he was driving equipment with an enclosed cab. It went into a ditch and rock bolt struck him in the neck. Stillwater SWC -8.72% noted that it was the mine's first fatality in more than six years and spokesman John Beaudry described the accident to the AP as a isolated incident and said "we are all grieving."
