Mayor of troubled Los Angeles suburb resigns

Vernon, Los Angeles County --

The mayor of this tiny, corruption-plagued Los Angeles suburb is resigning after helping fight back an effort to dissolve the city, officials said Tuesday.

Hilario Gonzales, 82, submitted a letter to the city on Monday indicating that he intends to resign as soon as the California Public Employees' Retirement System confirms his retirement payments, city spokesman Fred MacFarlane said.

...critics have pointed to the high salaries approved for some city workers and there have been repeated accusations of corruption over the years. Three former top Vernon officials have been convicted for misusing public funds.
