Report: Russia and China are top thieves of U.S. technology
Source: CNN

For the first time, the United States is publicly accusing China and Russia of being the top offenders in the theft of U.S. economic and technology information, according to an intelligence report released Thursday.

The two countries are "trying to build their economies" on American research and development, said a senior U.S. intelligence official, who briefed journalists about the report on the condition of anonymity.

An unclassified version of the report to Congress on Foreign Economic Collection and Industrial Espionage was released Thursday and focused primarily on the exploitation of cyberspace from 2009 to 2011.

"U.S. private sector firms and cybersecurity specialists have reported an onslaught of computer network intrusions that have originated in China," said the report, which was written by the office of the National Counterintelligence Executive.

1. Seems pretty smart to me, why pay for your own R&D if you can get away
with stealing someone else's?

3. Russia is good at stealing
Though to be fair, they also invested a lot in technology themselves, inventing space travel, but the Chinese only got what they got because wall street exported tech to them. That and the occasional Israeli.

6. Oh, come on, this is silly
We spread technology all over the world, radically changing every culture we touch with it, and then act shocked when not everyone shares our ruling class's attitudes towards intellectual property, national security, and who should rule the world.

Duh.

7. If Serbia shot down one F-117 and sent the pieces to Russia for study, it'd be considered theft.
This is what happened during the Kosovo War in 1999 when the US began bombing Serbia. One of the stealth bombers got shot down, and it was hauled away for study and reverse-engineering.
