Iowa Poll: Many in the GOP think Cain’s 9-9-9 plan would help them
Source: Des Moines Register

Two-thirds of likely Iowa Republican caucusgoers earning less than $50,000 a year believe they personally would be better off or in the same situation under Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 tax plan, The Des Moines Register’s new Iowa Poll shows.

Research-group reviews of the plan have found that most families making $100,000 or less would pay thousands of dollars more each year.

So after telling them their taxes would go up under this plan they are still in favor of it. What is wrong with the GOP base these days.

3. Stupidity is the one common characteristic of everyone in the Rethuglican base.
This poll essentially proves it. Ignorance is the only reason people in the 99% favor a flat tax.

6. These are likely the same people who think they're paying more federal taxes last year under Obama.
They listen to the RW talk shows and Faux Snooze and respond accordingly like good little sheep.

14. Get them out of politics and a lot of them are not stupid or ignorant..
What I see more than anything is an amazingly strong capability to tolerate or even completely ignore levels of cognitive dissonance that would stun a water buffalo, this is particularly true when politics or religion enters the discussion.

My oldest and closest friend is one of these people, he's really quite a good guy in many ways, very bright and near-genius in his field but he turned fundie after a really nasty divorce and then ended up getting all the right wing politics that go along with it.

Once the wingnut force has entered someone it takes a great deal to exorcise it, a lot of them will go to their graves like that but some are turnable with a great deal of patient effort. Confrontation works not at all with them, they immediately start listening to their inner Rush whisper in their ear.

18. That's true. I work for a mining company and several of my coworkers have advanced
degrees in mining engineering, and that's a very hard curriculum and you can't be a dummy and get through it. Yet when it comes to politics they have swallowed the Fox News line hook line and sinker and it's playing all day in their office. It's amazing.

15. They vote against their own interests....
It doesn't surprise me that some wealthier Americans tend to vote Republican because we know they are the party of the "haves". Many wealthier Americans, however, vote Democratic because of the values typically supported by the Democrats (e.g. inclusion, non-discrimination, fairness, interest in protecting the environment, helping the less fortunate, etc.).

But what does surprise me is how many lower and middle-income Americans vote Republican. The policies of the Republican party from being anti-union to tax policy that benefit the wealthy to opposing the development of sustainable energy and reducing carbon omissions hurt these Americans the most. They vote against their own interests time and again.

They have been led to believe to vote the way they are told, especially if that opinion comes from the pulpit. They are still confused by the rhetoric of the Republican party that say they are the party of small government and low taxes. They are for big government and low taxes when those two intersect to the benefit of the wealthiest Americans such as the defense industry. But they are for shafting the lower income Americans when it comes to being able to organize at the workplace for fair and equitable wages and benefits, ensuring the wealthy pay as few taxes as possible, etc.

Then there are the big social issues.....Gays, God and Guns. They have become convinced that if gays are treated equally in terms of employed non-discrimination to civil marriage equality, the world will come to an end. They believe the Democrats will take their guns away which is not true. Reasonable gun regulation does not deprive a law-abiding citizen of the privilege of owning a firearm. And lastly they think that the Republican party will help bring about The Rapture which isn't going to happen either.

19. To many right wing voters social issues are more important than economic issues. So to them

voting for a Bachmann or a Perry is in their own best interest because opposition to things like abortion and gay marriage are most important to them. If they had to choose between banning gay marriage or passing a jobs bill they would choose banning gay marriage (or abortion.)

17. It is "likely Republican caucusgoers" - which is a small group, even w/i the Republican party ....
I lived in Iowa for many years, attended caucuses (they can be a treat, interesting Democratic experience that can be far different than primaries - attend one if you get the chance).

But only a small number of people (in either party) actually attend the caucuses. Those who do (in either party) are extremely involved and committed to the party or a candidate. Just not many casual Republicans or casual Democrats attend (similar to primaries in other states).

This is a headline about a very small sample that doesn't necessarily represent even the registered Republican votes in the state.

20. Oppositional Defiance
They have been conditioned to hate Obama so much that nothing can penetrate their brain. And it is not just Iowa Republicans. Just look at the recent poll in South Carolina where something like 36% of Republicans down there don't think Obama is an American and 13% think he is Muslim. It is Jim Jones on a national scale.

What I love most about The Pizza Man's plan is the fact it was lifted from a 2004 video game. If he wins and puts his plan in effect (luckily, a 0.0001% chance), America can have a new slogan:

America: We're Governed By A Videogame!

27. The modern GOP are the ultimate "know nothing" party..
Their members are less educated (including self-educated) and in their reflex action to not believe anything the so called mainstream media reports they will listen to anything told to them as long as that person or group first tells them they subscribe to their world view.

If it were not so disturbing for our overall future it would be fascinating to study.
