Ambassador Bridge owner Matty Moroun may face jail time, penalties

After years of holding at bay the city, state, federal government, and Canadian authorities, Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel (Matty) Moroun may finally have met someone he cannot defeat.

Moroun, 84, and one of America's wealthiest people, faces potential jail time and financial penalties on Jan. 12, when he must appear in person before Wayne County Circuit Judge Prentis Edwards to face sanctions for contempt of court.

Edwards ruled against Moroun's company Thursday in the long-running battle over the Gateway project, a plan to connect bridge traffic directly to expressways via new ramps.

The state contends Moroun has stalled on his end of the project to protect his lucrative duty-free operation that's in the way of the Gateway.

Matty's lawyers will tie this up for many more years. The only money that slips from his hands is used to buy the Michigan legislature, to vote down any attempt to build a competing bridge.
