US GENERAL FIRED OVER REMARKS ABOUT AFGHAN LEADERS
Source: MSNBC

A top U.S. general in Afghanistan was relieved of duty Friday for "inappropriate public comments" after calling the Afghan government "isolated from reality" and President Hamid Karzai "erratic."
Maj. Gen. Peter Fuller, deputy commander for training Afghan security forces, blasted the Afghan government,

I don't understand why this country is so friendly with that Karzai? I think he is even more than erratic! Why don't we just get out of Afghanistan?

4. The truth hurts
Time to admit that both wars were a waste, get out, and let everybody in that country murder each other. It's not like they're going to be any different with some puppet government we put in.

6. But I'm thinking Obama may want to rethink this.
Not that I think he was the one to actually sign off on the termination. We need to find out who it was.

11. Wrong.
The answer is right there in the OP, but Maj. Gen. Peter Fuller is the one who was terminated.

Fuller was relieved of duty by the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen.

The one who did the terminating was Gen. John Allen.

18. According to the Pentagon...
Gen. Allen made the decision himself.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/top-us-general-fired-afghan-training-job-14884751

Pentagon press secretary George Little said Defense Secretary Leon Panetta was aware of Fuller's remarks. Little said Panetta has full confidence in Allen's judgment with respect to his decision in this case.

19. uh, yes, they do, and yes, he likely did. He was a Major General (2 star), who works for a 3 star
see if you can follow:

2 star works for 3 star, who commands ALL the generals and other officers and enlisted in Afghanistan.

2 star was the training officer for the afghan troops and all that.

2 star mouths off (btw, depending on a lot of circumstances, this may constitute as treason)

3 STAR FIRES 2 STAR. does any of this make sense? There are about a dozen levels of command b/t 3 Star and the White House.

23. There is no way this constitutes treason
his comments cannot in anyway be construed as waging war against us or giving our enemies aid and comfort.

I am very familiar with the command structure of the military so I don't need a lecture from you. Anytime a officer of the General rank is dismissed and it is likely to come to the public's attention the White House is notified and must approve. In this case the WH probably initiated the action.

The fact that you suggest that this may be "treason" makes me very skeptical you have ever had anything to do with the military. That is just absurd.

20. Well, he wasn't fired from the military altogether.
http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/top-us-general-fired-afghan-training-job-14884751

He was "relieved of his duties as deputy commander for the Afghan training mission," and "there was no indication whether Fuller will be reassigned or if he would retire."

I don't know that the White House would have to be involved, however, the Pentagon (Panetta) apparently approves of Allen's decision.

29. Too much military beauracracy already.
Poll out: 90% support this guy, according to MSNBC. Karzai is just echoing the comments of the STATE DEPT in the leaked cables.

Ya know I think Obama is probably -- I say probably -- gonna win against Romney. But I expect his approval rating to be as low as Bush's before he leaves office. I have no love for the man -- he's a naive liar who is taking an educated populace for a bunch of manipulable fools -- but he does a good job of governing when he takes responsibility. Not that a million other Americans couldn't do just as good of a job... the presidency is not that hard of a job.

Meet Hamid Karzai
or as President Obama calls him, "The Government of Afghanistan".

He was appointed by Bush the Lesser to run Afghanistan.
He is one of the most despicable criminals in The World,
But NOW we like him so much
that our children fighting and dying in the deserts of Afghanistan to keep him in power.

33. Something being true is one thing. Who should be saying it publicly is another thing.
Edited on Sat Nov-05-11 04:10 AM by No Elephants
Among other things, members of the military are not in charge of foreign relations.

Some of these generals seem to think they are POTUS, or like McChrystal, superior to the POTUS.

No one elected them and many of us are still trying our best to pretend this is still a democracy, not Sparta on steroids.

I have no problem with the CIC putting them in their place, both on their own merits and as an example to their colleagues.

All that said, those were relatively mild comments. Still, I have no problem.
