3. Lordy, I didn't have a clue what was happening!
I thought my drunk neighbors were shaking the stairwells up to the second floor. But then I heard everybody running outside and yelling and finally figured out it wasn't them. I was almost ready to call the cops! LOL

5.2 centered at Sparks, OK, which is 40-some miles away from OKC. I expect we'll have aftershocks here soon....

40. Wrong. We had a series of quakes along the Front Range in CO back in the 70s
that were clearly associated with some sort of well injecting or other subterranean human project, I have since forgotten. When it stopped, the quakes stopped.

7. Another earthquake shakes state; initial reports are that it is strongest in state history

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake -- the strongest in state history -- shook Oklahoma late Saturday night, less than 24 hours after a 4.8 quake shook the state.

The earthquake was centered north of Prague in Lincoln County, the same area as one that occurred at 2:12 a.m. Saturday, according to the United States Geological Survey. Prague is about 75 miles southwest of Tulsa.

Initial reports from EMSA and the Tulsa Police Department are that no major damage has been sustained in the Tulsa area.

13. 5.5 in 1882 and 5.5 in 1952
If the intensity of the Saturday night quake is confirmed, it would be the state's strongest on record. USGS records show that a 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck El Reno, just west of Oklahoma City, in 1952 and, before Oklahoma became a state in 1907, a quake of similar magnitude 5.5 struck in northeastern Indian Territory in 1882.

Edited on Sun Nov-06-11 01:10 AM by RamboLiberal
Republican presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann (Minn.) told supporters God was sending a message to Washington politicians through the earthquake and hurricane that pummeled the East Coast this weekend,

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/under-god/post/michele-bachmann-jokes-that-god-sent-hurricane-earthquake/2011/08/29/gIQAUN6QnJ_blog.html

And I hope no damage to all from that area.

14. Are all these earthquakes unusual?
Are all these earthquakes unusual?

Yes the number of earthquakes felt in 2009 and 2010 are unusual. The frequency of earthquakes has temporarily increased in Oklahoma, these earthquakes do not appear to be inconsistent with what might be called normal seismicity for Oklahoma.

30. Just because its on a fault,
...doesn't exclude fracking as a cause or a contributing factor.

I agree with you that in all probably this is a naturally occurring event,
but will keep an open mind until this has been investigated.

Some scientists think that the wastewater acts as a lubricant that reduces friction between underground rocks, allowing them to move more easily. When movement occurs on a sufficiently large scale, an earthquake results. Could be a combination of the fracturing of the crust elsewhere, the wastewater slickening things up, and natural geological pressures. Though, those natural geological pressures may not have resulted in an earthquake (or one of this severity) without the fracking.

23. I live in north TX..
... not far from OK. We had just gone to bed when the bed started shaking, wife asked me "are you shaking your leg"?

I sat up and I could feel it too, like the bed was rocking back and forth a couple times a second, gently, not really enough movement to be scary. It lasted about 5 seconds. I didn't really give it much thought, I was sleepy :)

27. 35 miles east of Tulsa
It shook our house enough to make the cups my wife has hanging under some cabinets sway back and forth. My clock said it was 6 minutes before 11PM when it happened. We were having a birthday party for my wife and her boss and we all go wow is that an earth quake. Most here had never felt an earthquake before like this one was as we don't have them here in Oklahoma very ofter. One last night and one the night before is really unusual.
I'd bet one of the gas companies are fracking in the area of the quakes as they were both pretty close to one another.

Myself I spent enough time in southern CA to know what an earth quake is

39. The Causes of the Oklahoma Earthquake

Most earthquakes are associated with major seismic zones, where the giant plates which make up the earth’s crust move relative to one another. Although the Pacific coast of North America is associated with such plate boundaries, and is consequently earthquake-prone, the central and eastern parts of the continent are isolated from such zones and generally regarded as being tectonically stable.

Earthquakes which occur in such areas are not, therefore, related to such large-scale plate dynamics, but are caused by movement along faults in the underlying bedrock. Tremors occurring on such fault systems are typically both smaller and shallower than those occurring at major plate boundaries – as occurred in Oklahoma.

...

The USGS’s review of significant earthquakes in the state includes estimates of damage. No deaths have been recorded, and most events cause only minor damage – though it’s worth noting that although the tremors were relatively small in scale, the fact that they were felt so widely is typical of tremors east of the Rockies, where shaking is generally more widely felt than those to the west.

The reasons for this are complex, but the British Geological Survey’s Dr. Roger Musson told Decoded Science in a recent interview that a significant factor is the distance from major plate boundaries: in areas made up of older, colder continental rock, the seismic waves generated by an earthquake spread further before their energy is dissipated.
