No water or power for illegal immigrants
Edited on Sun Nov-06-11 02:33 PM by AlphaCentauri
Source: Decatur Daily

Decatur Utilities now prohibits illegal immigrants from obtaining electric, gas, water or sewer service, an official said Friday.

Stephen Pirkle, DU business manager and chief financial officer, said DU previously required residents seeking utilities to provide identification, but their immigration status was not relevant.

“We did not document or confirm whether or not they were citizens or aliens here legally,” Pirkle said. “Because of the new law, we are now going through the process to confirm that they are either a citizen or an alien here legally.

“If not, we will deny them service.”

24. I know quite a few homeowners who should go to jail for that then
Edited on Sun Nov-06-11 07:08 PM by Cronus Protagonist
In fact, every day at the hardware store, I bet the cops could find fifty or more homeowners who hire illegal residents to carry, paint, move, build, tear down, do their gardening, pool service, haul away their old furniture and all kinds of things. These criminal homeowners should have their utilities cut and tried for their crimes?

Sorry, I can't support that, but go ahead and criminalize people for helping the working poor get some cash to put food on their kids, if that floats your boat, and then ask yourself this, "Am I still a progressive?".

25. No, those people took jobs away from AMERICAN CITIZENS
and probably violated labor laws by paying them less than min wage too. I support immigration but support MY COUNTRY'S CITIZENS FIRST.

And I don't see legions of American workers hanging outside the hardware store looking for work, any work.

32. Not true. I have two friends that go regularly to get work and
stand there, admittedly, with a majority of latinos, either legal or illegal.

"I denied electricity to an illegal alien, Timmy!"

"You mean, like from Mars?

"No, from Mexico! Our town is now safe from Pedro running his dishwasher."

So... Utility billing departments are now on the front line of the immigration wars? Next, is Wal-Mart supposed to check immigration status in the checkout line?

4. Here comes the plague
I don't think cutting health and sanitation or safety will be in our best interests.

People will still take a dump somewhere.

Just like the Dark Ages all over. People really never learn.

13. punishing "Illegal" immigrants is more important than public health
the "nanny state" takes care of the general welfare

the "manly state" ensures disobedience is severely punished

If someone can pay for utilities, how is it a conservative government can force a business from selling their services to that person.

11. Public safety of everyone now at risk
So, no electricity, no sewage, no water? Then there will be campfires, generators, and defecation in the streets. This will increase the risk of fires, and the spread of disease. They are called public utilities for a reason. Stupid motherfuckers. Every year that goes by, I get more disgusted by the handful of my ignorant, bigoted, countrymen that run this America. :puke:

These companies should lose their "public" utilities licenses. Time for us to get off the grid and dig a well.

31. If you accept the denial of water and power to fellow human beings, regardless of their paperwork
you are a heartless douchebag.

(among those harmed by what you would support are children and economic refugees who faced the choice of migrating or starving --or allowing their families to starve).

Says such 'contracts' will be considered null and void in Alabama courts.

It's not so much vindictiveness as it is corporations and utilities CYA.

which should threaten to triple their rates or something if they continue this un-American behavior.
