SB 5 headed for big defeat

Labor is poised for a big victory in Ohio Tuesday. PPP's final poll on Issue 2 finds 59% of voters plan to reject Senate Bill 5, with only 36% voting for approval.

What might be most remarkable about the 23 point margin in this poll is that it's exactly identical to what we found the first time we polled on this issue all the way back in March. Voters were furious then and that anger has continued all the way to November.

Democrats are almost unanimous in their opposition to SB 5, supporting repeal by an 86-10 margin. Meanwhile there's division in the Republican ranks- 30% are planning to vote down their Governor's signature proposal while only 66% are supportive of it. Independents split against it by a 54/39 spread as well.

If this margin holds on Tuesday night it will be a humiliating defeat for John Kasich. Kasich continues to be one of the most unpopular Governors in the country with only 33% of voters approving of him to 57% who disapprove. The only person we've found with worse numbers this year is Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie. If Ohio voters could do it over again they'd reelect Ted Strickland by a 55-37 margin over Kasich, and although they don't have an opportunity for a redo on the Gubernatorial election the likely results of the Senate Bill 5 referendum on Tuesday can be seen as a proxy for it.

60. Paper Ballots
Unless EVER STATE IN THE UNION uses PAPER BALLOTS with a paper
trail, we haven't REAL DEMOCRACY in this country.

These Republicans couldn't go into an election unless they're
cheating.
Obviously, they don't want to HEAR the peoples voices.

It doesn't matter what the polls say, unless we have PAPER
BALLOTS, we won't have fair elections.
Electronic voting machines can be hacked very easily, so don't
be surprised if you lose or there's a very small gap in votes
and the Republicans want a recount!

Keeping my fingers crossed that the people of Ohio are heard.

3. Well, now they have to build on this situation....
Edited on Sun Nov-06-11 11:40 PM by WCGreen
The debacle that was the 2010 election here in Ohio was put in place because of the ego of a couple of dinosaurs hanging over the democratic party.

They got lucky that this was handed to them.

If the historic trends keeps up, you can bet the dems will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in 2012.

Edited on Mon Nov-07-11 12:00 AM by Leftist Agitator
I also grew up on the OH border, so I'm quite familiar with the Eastern part of the state.

Depressing or no, may Ohioans have the fortitude to preserve their proud legacy of Labor Rights, and have this scar on their collective psyche herald the beginning of a new era for one and all.

Especially in Columbus! Dumb, redneck, RW population that loves to pretend to be affluent. Traffic sucks, people suck. Heading out west soon to places where the people are hopefully not so Gad Damn stupid. They elected Kasich for Christs sake! I noticed now that they seem to be keeping their mouths shut about voting against their own self-interests.

7. I live in Ohio and have seen first-hand at past elections the lengths to which the
Republican machine will go to try and win an issue. This one should go down with a loud and intense crash. Not one person I have spoken to, Democrat or Republican has anything good to say about Kasich. It is a VERY unpopular bill. Anything but a massive trouncing should make us all watchdogs of the coming Ohio elections in 2012.

... as I recall, Ohio has had problems with this. I had a picture on another hard drive of ballot boxes from Ohio precincts being loaded into the back of a red? pickup or Blazer to be "counted elsewhere", back in 2004.

13. Good Question!
Harvey Wasserman On Ohio's Upcoming Labor Rights Referendum

"The Ohio Legislature has passed a horrific bill designed to gut the public power of public sector unions. Tuesday's referendum is meant to overturn it. Polls show us ahead by 25% or more. But with the 1%-GOP in control of all branches of government, the theft of the vote count is a high likelihood"

. . . not to be Johnny Raincloud here, but I feel Kat$hit is going to get his way anyway. The Koch's didn't pay all of this influential money in the midwest for their grand class war plans NOT to succeed. They're just begging for us to start something with them. The defeat of this bill is only going to make Kat$hit pull not-so-sneaky back door tricks to get his union-busting provisions in.

28. It's going to take "You cannot HIDE the Criminality" fraud for this to come out "Yes".
I'm seeing "No on Issue 2" signs on traditionally Republican households.

A shit bill that screws ALL workers is a shit bill that screws ALL workers. That's not "left vs right", that's "right vs wrong". Kat$hit overreached and overplayed his hand when he openly declared war on labor. There are conservative and Democratic firefighters, librarians and city workers that stand to lose big if this passes.

If Issue 2 passes, it would literally BE a CRIME. It's a mandate, a LOCK. This will not be a Bewsh vs Gore scenario.

SB5 passes with a slim margin of victory. No one can explain this amazing turnaround at the polls! Diebold machines were used to recount the votes and came up with an even larger victory for Governor Kasich each time.

30. I'm so happy to see this. I'm originally from OH and many of my
family and friends still live there. My parents were teachers and I grew up seeing what they had to deal with every single fucking day. Not to mention the lack of appreciation and monetary compensation. They dedicated their lives to the profession and now most of their oh-so-lavish pensions goes to pay for my stepdad's nursing home, which he had to enter in his early sixties due to a dementia condition. They never even got to enjoy their retirement together and now what little they do have left, goddamn fucking Kasich and company are trying to take away from them, while he pockets the millions of dollars he earned from Lehman Bros. after OH had lost 400 million bucks taking HIS advice on investments. THAT is what caused the trouble with pension funding, not the "greed" of "overpaid, lazy" public servants. You know, those lazy asses who teach our children, protect our families from crime and fire, etc., etc.

I think the problem with OH last year was Cuyahoga County (Cleveland) and the scandal involving the commissioners, especially Jimmy Dimora. I think that was one of the few reasons that Kasich managed to pull it off. What a horrible little fucker he is, and was, even as a Columbus congress critter.

I have seen a total or 2 pro SB 5 signs and even the lawns of long time republican house holds are sporting anti SB 5 bills ....
even a state senator who voted for SB 5 last winter does not have a pro SB 5 sign up in his yard.

I voted early last week and there was a steady stream of voters ..... and they all looked to be anti SB 5 folk.

we needed a little less than 300,000 signatures to get a kill SB 5 vote this fall and got 1,300,000 signatures and could have got a
hell of a lot more.

Polls on state issues in Ohio are notoriously inaccurate - I've seen 20 point margins disappear on election day. It's not all Diebold.
And hey, don't y'all be dissin my state here!! Western Lake Erie and Sandusky Bay have some of the best sailing anywhere (for, well, seven months per year) - and, um, except for monster algae blooms like the one we had this year.

52. I love Ohio
Ohio is my home, and you won't find better people anywhere. For the record, we are NOT a bunch of illiterate rednecks. As someone who was manning the phones after spending hours standing in a cold rain to vote, I heard stories of voting irregularities that were seemingly unbelievable. I will go to my grave knowing that Kerry won Ohio! That said, the people of Ohio are desperate for the glory days when good jobs were abundant. Because of this, the voters swing from party-to-party hoping that the next leader will bring back prosperity. It can be frustrating and unproductive, but it's something that we need to remember going into 2012. I think the silver-lining of Kasich is that he may have taught the voters that the 'grass is not always greener.'

Issue 2 has galvanized the voters. I can't recall an issue that has meant so much to the lower/middle class voters. I'm also very pleased that the weather should hold up which will allow more voters to make it to the polls. My one concern is that I have received 3 pro-SB5 robocalls for every repeal call. I completely agree that this vote is as close as we can get to a recall on Kasich.

This means whether the Koch Bros will prevail.. and will be able to bust every Teacher, Policeman and Fireman to minimum wage.

Gov Kasich and the Koch Bros stand ready to reduce the standard of living in Ohio ...one job at a time.

They want to bring in XE and Wackenhut to replace existing fire and police ...for $9 an hour. And they want to privatize all the prisons... "For Profit".

If "For Profit Prisons" and electonic voting machines are not enough to scare you... just think about life under the Koch Bros!

I hope the people in Ohio don't let Rush Limbaugh and Hannity make their decisions for them.

I've followed Kasich's career from being one of Newt's supposedly smarter generals during the republican 1995 takeover of Congress to now. He actually asked to sit down and talk with the unions about the recall issue, and the unions told him to go piss up a rope since he didn't talk to them before.

This is better than chocolate.

61. I hope so, but I am reminded of Lincoln's remark...
...when hearing of all the great things generals were about to accomplish.

The hen is the wisest of all animals. She never cackles until after she lays an egg.
