Connecticut utility will not meet deadline to restore power to 99% of customers
Source: CNN

Connecticut's largest utility pushed back a self-declared deadline to restore power to 99% of its customers by midnight Sunday, more than a week after a crippling early blizzard.

"We have missed our goal, and for that I apologize to everyone," Jeffrey Butler, the president of Connecticut Light and Power, told reporters Sunday evening in Hartford. He blamed what he called a historic storm for the delay, but admitted, "We have not met our expectations and those we set for all of you."

Butler said 95% to 96% of its customers statewide had power, and the utility expected to reach the 99% target by midnight Monday. But 80,000-plus customers, most of them in the north-central part of the state, still had no electricity Sunday evening.

Temperatures were expected to dip into the low 30s overnight, and about 2,100 state residents spent Saturday night in shelters, Gov. Dannel Malloy said.

1. What a mess....I have friends in CT still without power.
Hard to believe that a state the size of CT with their resources still are w/o power a week after the storm.

2. They never do
one time a much less powerful storm had Norwalk out for three days.

Note that the Bridgeport and New Haven areas are served by a different utility, United Illuminating. Somehow UI does a MUCH better job of getting people back on when they're hit by the exact same storms.

3. Would't be a better idea to put power lines under ground?
Oh yeah, I forgot. That's infrastructure, and the republican won't pay for that. Tax cut for the rich, more important.:sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm:

23. Ironically enough
We have underground wires. Didn't help, as the problem was probably farther up the line.

But yes, at least all new building ought to have underground wires.

4. Power outrages hit 4%
That CNN headline got me again. I imagined that 99% of customers were out of service. Made me look.

I sympathize with the 4%. It is life threatening. I hope that the power co. Is doing everything humanly possible to restore electricity.

To CNN editors: you demean your product by sensationalizing your news.

8. From Katrina to this snowstorm -- we should be very worried about this feeble response -- !!!
We still branches, limbs and remains of trees all over our town -- we lost more

this time around than with Irene --

Obviously, they've reduced the manpower in our town and citizens are suffering for it!

And Connecticut -- Wow!!

America is now #1 in disarray and corruption!!!

15. If my insomnia ever goes away, I will not be
Opening that door into the hellish world of M$M. And it is usually only after midnight - often only thing going on is ads for skin products, or else the news from the Big Money people on how the stock markets are doing.

17. Have you noticed .....

how in the wee hours they aren't even supply programming or re-runs any longer or

even old movies -- just paid ads?

We're giving them out air waves for NOTHING and they're making money simply from

advertisements! We could do that!

If we ever get any justice in this world again, we need to completely toss corporations

out of broadcasting!!

Would also mention that radio is equally useless for info!

Thanks to our elite/corporate Congress there's pretty much nothing left anywhere!!

:hi:

27. We just watched the Alfred Hitchcok TV program from the
Late fifties, and there were no commercials, as it was featured on Cable. And we noted that it ended at 8:48 -- meaning that back in its day, there were only six minutes of commercials per half hour.

Now there is some thirteen minutes of commercials per each half hour. Hour long TV shows are only 34 minutes long. And many of the commercials are for other TV shows, so the network is just "shorting' the production end of things. it is cheaper to create a 34 minute long hur of TV that a 48 minute hour of TV.

And the quality of TV shows is horrid. The revisions that occurred due to the FCC re-writes via the Telecommunications Act of 1996 were not in favor of the pesky public -just because those airwaves really are our air waves...

I get so steamed thinking about it.

28. True -- Reagan let them DOUBLE the commercial time -- and those LOUD commercials?
You know the ones you have to dive across the room to quite down --

they were supposed to be stopped -- then that was reversed -- not sure

what's going on now -- but delayed!

Ain't democracy grand?

9. This is from late last week

UI has mostly shoreline customers; the bulk of Nutmeggers (especially inland ones) have CL&P, where the snow was heaviest. Danbury and Waterbury got over a foot of snow, but here on the shore we got maybe an inch or two on our cars. The stuff barely stuck to the roadway. Even still, the neighbor's tree limb cracked and came partway down and spent a week resting on 3 power lines. A week! With three power lines holding up most of the weight of this great big bough. It's a miracle nothing broke and we didn't lose power.

21. And look at places like Wallingford
where the town runs the utility. Power was out only briefly, and people were back up almost right away.

Public utilities should not be public companies - there should never be any conflict between doing the best thing for customers and pleasing shareholders. It's an innate conflict and it should not be allowed.

22. I think that's part of it
Also, they wouldn't pay to have other power companies "on call" for emergencies. That's why MA, NY and NJ were back to normal MUCH faster. They had paid - the crews from out of state went there.

There's also tree-trimming, and issues about who's responsible there - CL&P or towns or individuals.

One problem on another - but nothing was done about any of it, even after the long power outages after Irene.

26. Our town has been laying off people -- obviously have about half the people they need now!!
Branches and limbs are laying all over the place in our town along every street

and roadway -- and still some of it from Irene!

We lost more stuff from trees and trees during this snowstorm than during Irene.

We also lost a major restaurant in our town cause they town had let so many firemen

go that they didn't have enough manpower to run some of the machinery to save the

restaurant!

And believe me, all of this is hitting the fan here in our town -- !!

18. Yup
We knew there was no chance of it. They've been lying right on through this entire situation.

There are still towns where hundreds of people are without power, in dangerous situations.

CL&P totally blew this one - two months after they totally blew Irene. There's going to be hell to pay, and I for one will enjoy watching them squirm.

29. Just imagine the tons of food that had to be thrown away!! Last time with Irene ....
many of our restaurants -- and at least one large supermarket were effected --

and had to dispose of all kinds of foods.

This time a very large supermarket in my son's neighborhood had to dispose of

great quantities of food -- and didn't get restocked for pretty much a week!
