SOFIA (Reuters) - A Bulgarian soldier was shot in the head and is in critical condition after his unit was ambushed in the Shi'ite holy city of Kerbala in southern Iraq (news - web sites), the defense ministry said on Friday.

His unit came under machine gun and rocket-propelled grenade fire while returning from guard duty at Kerbala's city hall on Friday morning, the ministry said in a statement. The Bulgarians returned fire, it added, without giving further details.

The soldier was evacuated by helicopter to a military hospital. He was conscious but breathing only with the aid of medical apparatus, the statement said.

The safety of Bulgaria's 450-strong contingent in Iraq is an issue of intense public debate in the Balkan state since the unit came under repeated attack from militants led by radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr earlier this month.
