Berlusconi to resign after parliament OKs reforms.

ROME — Premier Silvio Berlusconi promised Tuesday to resign after parliament passes economic reforms demanded by the European Union, capping a two-decade political career that has ended with Italy on the brink of being swept into Europe's debt crisis.

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano met for about an hour with Berlusconi after the premier lost his parliamentary majority during a routine vote earlier Tuesday. In a statement, Napolitano's office said Berlusconi had promised during the meeting to resign once the economic reforms have passed parliament.

5. Stocks Rebound as Italy's Berlusconi to Resign
Stocks jumped in afternoon trading Tuesday, following news Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi will resign after the approval of new budget law.

“The market likes the announcement…But I’m not sure if this is going to change things at the end of the day,” said Doreen Mogavero, president and CEO of Mogavero Lee & Company. “(Berlusconi’s) resignation gives us a better chance at getting resolutions quicker, but it does not negate the fact that there are still difficulties in Italy.”

9. Hope this isn't another 'rat leaving the sinking ship' the way GWB did...
Other than that, I'd say they're better off without the guy.

16. I will believe it when he signs the resignation papers
not a minute before.

Otherwise ... about time. And it will be interesting to see who the Italians will vote in next and how long they will last.

17. Euro crisis claims another leader as Berlusconi agrees to step down
It's been a long road for Italy.

From the Christian Science Monitor:

By Robert Marquand

Italian Premier Silvio Berlusoni waves to journalists as he leaves the Quirinale, Presidential palace, after meeting with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, in Rome, Tuesday. Berlusconi says his decision to resign after parliament passed economic reforms is for the good of the country, and to settle financial markets that have lost confidence in Italy's ability to rein in debt and spur growth.

Europe continued to move into uncharted waters today as Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's rule appeared over and Greece has reportedly decided on a new prime minister.

Greece, and more significantly Italy, are in the throes of a eurozone debt crisis whose dynamics appear to be accelerating, with what two years ago was an economic and banking crisis now proving to have profound political consequences.

“The eurozone now faces political, economic, financial, and institutional crises all at the same time,” argues Sony Kapoor of the Brussels think tank Re-Define.

Prime Minister Berlusconi today failed to achieve a majority in the Italian parliament in a vote considered a symbolic referendum on his ability to handle the nation at a time of greater urgency than Italy has faced in decades. He agreed to resign if parliament passed austerity measures that the European Union wants.

.....

Ireland, Portugal, Greece and now, Italy.

It's been a long road for us all. Here's to better times ahead. :toast:
