West Hollywood OKs ban on fur clothing sales

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) -- West Hollywood has approved an ordinance that bans the sale of fur clothing, becoming what is believed to be the first U.S. city to enact such a law.

Council deputy Michelle Rex says the precedent-setting ordinance received final approval early Tuesday. The ban would affect sales of clothing made from the skin or pelt of animals with hair, wool or fur.

Rex says the ordinance wouldn't take effect until 2013.

West Hollywood has long been known for its animal-friendly laws. It bans declawing of cats, and pets are formally recognized as "companions" while their owners are "guardians."

when I became a vegetarian and was enlightened on the suffering these fur-bearing creatures went through for my vanity.

Go figure.

5. Cows are killed for food (as reprehensible as that is.) Fur bearing animals are killed for fashion.

15. Now that's just silly.
That idea that sheep are killed for fashion while cows are killed for food is totally absurd.

I imagine one step usually follows only after the preceding step-- unless of course, if one is simply walking backwards... or even side to side.

9. I don't recall any furriers in West Hollywood.
It is not exactly a big town. Not suited to the climate, either.

shoulders. You can see many photos showing those things from the 30's, 40, 50's, etc.

I am sure if you wanted to buy a fur in that area, you could find a retailer who would sell you one, regardless of whether furriers are actually there sewing skins together.

In any event, I see no harm in making a statement, even if no one wears fur there today.

13. So I'm assuming that means no leather or suede either
First, I am totally against the use of fur for coats but lets face it - my shoes are leather, I own a suede jacket and even a pigskin football. So who am I to judge those who wear fur coats just because my animal isn't as cute as theirs.

20. Am I the only one who has a problem with this ?
Although I am dead against fur, I have a problem with a US municipality outlawing a legal product. What if East Ozark, Ark wanted to outlaw the pill? Or condoms? Or rap music?

24. No. This is an unwarranted govt intrusion into the marketplace.
The government should need to show some public harm from selling furs in order to have any input in the matter.
