Annise D. Parker won a second term Tuesday as mayor of the nation's fourth-largest city, narrowly avoiding a runoff despite having no well-funded or well-known opponents and spending $2.3 million to promote herself to Houston voters this year.

Houston is the largest American city to ever have an openly gay mayor. Although I am frequently ashamed to be from Texas I have often been proud to be Houstonian.
Houston and Austin are rare bastions in a bloody red state (and sorry those of you from Dallas, Plano ruins it for you).
