Scorned Penn State coach painted out of campus mural
Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Like a scorned son air brushed out of a family portrait, a local artist on Wednesday literally painted over the image of disgraced former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky on a popular campus mural.

Michael Pilato, a local painter who created the "Inspiration" mural in 2001 to honor people he admired, said he received hundreds of emails asking him to remove Sandusky after the former assistant coach was charged with serial sexual abuse of young boys.

Pilato, who said he met Sandusky only once, hesitated at first because everyone is "innocent until proven guilty." But Pilato said he read on the Internet the graphic grand jury report detailing the alleged assaults of young boys over nearly 15 years, and started to think about the victims.

1. Saw this live on my local teevee news at noon
Most of the half-hour show was taken up with the 'tragic' news of JoePa's imminent 'decision to retire.' Saw the artist paint bars, as in a jail, over Sandusky's face before blotting him out entirely. A pink ribbon was added in his place. The reporter didn't dare mention the jail bars as they were being painted.

9. Why stop at mere vandalism - why not rape & murder everyone
who ever went to Penn State, or watched one of their games on TV. Then sell heir kids into slavery in Morocco. That will teach them! Laws protecting people & property probably help only the 1% anyway.

11. Conflating minor damage to property with the worst of capital crimes is a little excessive.
Property is not sacred.

6. Trying to understand that no one spoke publicly on this until last weekend...
if this stuff had been "known" for over 10 years, you'd think that at least the victims would have made these issues public in that timeframe. I think we've just touched the tip of the iceberg in terms of exposing the rotten entrails of a corrupt bureaucracy there.

Kind of scary to see what many had assumed to be what most people thought was a top football program and ethically sound program to suddenly have the "windows opened" just last week.

Seems kind of curious timing too, which makes you wonder when the grand jury and others found out about this too. It would have probably had been better if it was done earlier in off season so as not to put such pressure on to the innocent kids that are on their football team in a conference championship race now.

But of course the welfare of those poor kids that got abused is above everything else. Just hope that everyone can reflect where they could have helped tackle this earlier and not made it as monstrous as it has become now for everyone involved.

It isn't often that coaches, the athletic directory, and University president all leave at about the same time. And since they are probably the least experienced athletic program in hiring of new football coaches, they are in for some big challenges in the coming years.

5. I met Pilato once.
His "Inspiration" is located outside a brew pub. We stopped for diner on our way home from a weekend trip. As we were leaving we were admiring the artwork when a stranger walked by us. We weren't local so my buddy asked the stranger if he knew the artist's name. He replied, "I should." Pilato spent the next ten minutes explaining his work.

8. It just looks like censorship to me.
Erasing him erases the profoundly important message that a whole bunch of ADULTS fell for him, and pretends that his evil was the only imperfection in the picture.
