Feds announce probe of Penn State abuse case
Source: Centre Daily Times / AP

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Education is launching an investigation into whether Penn State officials broke federal law by not reporting sexual abuse allegations to proper authorities.

Officials said Wednesday that they will look into whether the school violated the Clery Act, which requires colleges and universities to prepare, publish and distribute an annual security report disclosing all criminal offenses reported to campus security or local police. The department is responsible for compliance with the act, which is named for Jeanne Clery, a 19-year-old Lehigh University student who was raped and murdered by another student in her dorm room in 1986.

The inquiry stems from a child sex-abuse scandal involving former Penn State football defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, who was arrested Saturday on charges of molesting eight boys over 15 years.

“If these allegations of sexual abuse are true then this is a horrible tragedy for those young boys,” Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a statement. “If it turns out that some people at the school knew of the abuse and did nothing or covered it up, that makes it even worse.”

3. Spanier will certainly be gone
I tend to think that you're right, and that Joe Pa's pathetic attempt to fend off the Trustees this afternoon will fail utterly.

They've been in the room for 25 minutes. We should have a statement by 9pm EST, I suspect.

He needs to be, minimally. What athletes and those associated with sports get away with is second only to what Wall Street gets away with.

7. wow -- Clery act is related to Federal Financial Aid programs
I believe that non-compliance can theoretically threaten an institution's participation in federal student aid programs. I'm sure that is unlikely here, but the investigation is a big deal.

10. Looks like their loophole was that no Clery report was required
since the AD, not Campus Security or Local Police, was notified.

How convenient.
