Discrepancies noted in Kerry's record
"Vietnam combat records posted on John F. Kerry's campaign website for the month of January 1969 as evidence of his service aboard swift boat No. 94 describe action that occurred before Kerry was skipper of that craft, according to the officer who said he commanded the boat at the time.

On the site, the Massachusetts senator is described as the skipper of Navy boat No. 94 during several actions in late January 1969.

However, Edward Peck, who was the skipper of the 94 before Kerry took over, said combat reports posted by the campaign for January 1969 involve action when he was the skipper, not Kerry. Peck, who was seriously wounded in fighting that took place on Jan. 29, 1969, said he believes Kerry campaign aides made a mistake in claiming Kerry as skipper of the 94 at that time."

What's the story on this? Anyone know? Kerry's campaign got the records from the Navy...

1. Non story
Basically, Kerry's site discussed what happened with his boat. As far as I could tell there is no claim that on the dates in question that Kerry was in fact commanding the boat. It's definitely misleading though and should be changed to accurately reflect the time when he was commanding the boat.

37. Kerry was on Boat 44 in Dec and early Jan - and media can't check the
combat reports for Boat 44?

So we have a correct combat report for Boat 94 - and the combat is listed as if Kerry was the Skipper in a campaign email, but the former skipper has a different date that Kerry gave up command of Boat 44 in order to take command of boat 94.

And this is news?

Some staffer may - or may not - have a bad date and this Boston Globe fellow kranish@globe.com felt that the staffer should know when the 20 pages recieved from the Navy had a bad date.

So perhaps the Jan 26 combat and the Jan 29 fighting should not be attributed to Kerry - or maybe it should - since Kerry took over the Boat after the Skipper was injured.

And the reporter does not know that Kerry was, or was not on the Boat 94 on Jan 29. All the reporter can say is that combat reports do not mention Kerry on Jan 29 on Boat 94. He did not check out boat 44 combat reports.

And this is what we get in lieu of a story on any of 100 Bush impeachable scandals and the maybe 50 Bush life style choice stories from the 70's.

I do love our unbiased media. Our not right wing GOP controlled media - they just act like they are.

However, the GOP gasbags will use this as proof that Kerry didn't serve in Viet Nam at all.

7. Yeah,
the focus here if we have to go to the late 60's again should be on the fact the man served, while a stupid coke-snorting alcoholic chimp was off avoiding National Guard duties in Alabama or Texas or Cokesville or wherever. Disgusting Repugs.

8. It probably wasn't reviewed by Kerry before it was put on his website.
It's a mistake plain and simple. They accidently posted the combat reports from the previous boat commander. They need to post the reports during Kerry's period of command, own up to the mistake and move on before it gets blown out of proportion.

12. I'm not disagreeing with you
but claiming someone elses actions under enemy fire as your own will sour a lot of vets on Kerry if this story gets widespread attention. It needs to be fixed quickly. We don't need the boat commander during that period appearing on talk shows saying Kerry is a liar. Especially since Kerry's commander has verified the facts as stated by the previous commander who was severely wounded and whose hospitaization led to Kerry taking command of the boat.

IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED TODAY! THIS IS A REAL MESS AND HAS THE POTENTIAL TO SEVERELY DAMAGE KERRY'S REPUTATION.

Worse of all the Republicans can sit back and let the media ruin Kerry over this. They don't have to do a thing! If Kerry's staff isn't aware of this, someone needs to tell them.

11. what a slimy story
there is a definite implication, if you don't read it carefully that Kerry somehow is taking credit for actions that happened before he was on the boat.

Just sit back and watch the right wingers use this story to make that charge, and wonder exactly what the point of this story is, unless it is intended as a gift to those right wingers.

13. It's more than implication.
Citing the previous boat commander's statement and Kerry's superior officer's statement puts this into the "house on fire category." This is not a crying wolf situation.

17. How sad
for this nation that we have now begun to measure the length and depth of a schrapnel wound to determine if his courage was significant enough to think of him as presidential material. Or to so quickly misread something so to find error in it.

Instead of being on the defensive and correcting everything to make it more plain, instead of jumping and showing more and more proof, I think it is time to ask people what they did to protect this country other than to criticize. And when they say he got shot three times and then he got an early out, ask them if they thought he jumped in front of those bullets for the early out, why would he do that being he volunteered to go, how could he do it and how many bullets does one need to take to justify going home? There is no reason we need to defend his record as it is a very exemplary record, but we need to ask what more could he have done in their minds? He is a good man, did his best, and is yet simply human. This is his record, and if someone is not satisfied, then I suspect nothing else will change their minds. It is too psychotic, Kerry's record against Bush's and they don't think Kerry's is good enough? Not all the country needs to vote for Kerry for him to win, blow some of these people off.

23. Well, if neat and tidy bother you, no wonder you like *Bush.
He certainly didn't have a neat and tidy time jumping over an 18 month waiting list to get into the TANG to fly an aircraft which was not used in Vietnam and then later got grounded after refusing a drug test and deserting to work on politics and drink.

More, but that would be too neat and tidy, no doubt.

27. well, there are still a couple of pages of Bush's record missing
maybe Bush should return his 3 purple hearts

...oh wait...Bush never was in Vietnam or combat...he was snorting coke and getting drunk

What does it matter what kind of injuries Kerry received? He was serving his country and was wounded doing it. Kerry didn't dodge his duty and risk his live for his country.

Bush was risking his and other people's live while driving drunk. What a disgrace to this great Country.

28. Actually the records have been released and available for all to inspect
Edited on Fri Apr-23-04 11:56 AM by Bandit
They indicate the removal of shrapnel from his arm and a bandage applied and he was sent back into combat. How many purple hearts do you have if I may be so bold? Remember a person doesn't request a purple heart. The medical person who attends the patient submits the forms and they are then either approved or disapproved by the commanding officer. Kerry had nothing to do with it other than accepting medical attention. There is nothing more scary than hearing shrapnel screaming overhead. One could almost receive a purple heart for the extreme fright instilled by enemy fire. I can guess by your posts that you have never incurred any such thing. Also Senator Kerry volunteered for Vietnam right at the height of the conflict. Right during the Tet Offensive he said send me to Nam. He could have easily not done so as he had already served a full year in theatre. He was on his second tour of duty.

You are saying that Kerry, aware that he could be discharged after he earned three Purple Hearts, deliberately made sure that he would be injured in combat?

Are you crazy?

33. Yes, I'm sure you must be right.
Or maybe it was all part of a massive left-wing plot w/i the military to get Kerry out ASAP. His superior officers could have caused Kerry's wounds themselves so as to minimize the amount of injury. I bet they even figured that he would run for president one day and decided to throw in some other medals for good measure.

Jesus, do you even think as you're typing? Even Jay Leno (who rarely misses an opportunity to denigrate Kerry) was laughing at this ludicrous RW smear attempt. Hm, he put himself in the path of bombs and bullets so he could make it out alive...truly, you embarrass yourself.
