Joan Baez to sing for Occupy Wall Street on Veteran's Day

By Grace Zhou | November 11, 2011 11:59 AM EST

Despite the coldness on Veteran's Day of 2011, Occupy Wall Street is heated up for a rally and concert featuring folk singer Joan Baez, who has been impressed by the movement as a human rights activist and protest singer.

On Friday, the Foley Square in downtown Manhattan will see Occupy Wall Street protesters holding their first permitted event in the city. Originally planned for Washington Square Park, the concert was moved to the Foley Square as city officials' compromise.

The event is dubbed "Honor the Dead, Fight Like Hell For the Living," featuring artists and speakers including Joan Baez, Sergent Shamar Thomas, Ryan Harvey, Max Rameau from Take Back the Land, a speaker from OWS Direct Action, and a speaker from the Iraq Veterans Against The War, according to an announcement on Occupy Wall Street website.

Hundreds, if not thousands, are expected to pack the tiny square, said the organizers.

7. I take exception to your comment. I am a younger person but I love Joan Baez.
She has a beautiful voice and she has worked for progressive causes all her life. I don't care what generation she is from.

to something similar and been stopped?

Hint: Jay Z deciding to make "Occupy" slogan clothing and NOT donate any portion of the profits to the Occupy movement doesn't count.

14. You're kidding, right.
I haven't seen her perform in a few years, so I don't know how her voice has fared, but when I saw her, she was pretty remarkable (although my favorite was Judy Collins). As far as not worth . . ., if you are talking of her commitment to progressive causes, if you can assert that, then clearly you don't know. . ..

...and you're posting here under a pseudonym, spouting hyperbole and ageist claptrap. When thousands come to see you do any of those three things, give us a ring.

9. Perhaps OWS is at the mercy of those who offer to share their talent with the group
What part of Joan Baez' work (and Nash and Crosby of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young,) is irrelevant today?

Thanks,
-MV

60s, Pete Seeger was irrelevant - which, of course makes him doubly irrelevant now. Oh, and Arlo.. And in the next fight, because this won't be the last, if the dropkicks are still kicking ( and they will be), they will be irrelevant. of course the new generation will have their go,but if we made a major mistake in the 60s - and we did- we didn't make the kind of alliances - particularly with blue-collar workers- that we needed to make. A lot of us - myself included - were self-righteous and pretty damn arrogant (hey, I was 18). What I see is that this generation is not making the same mistake.

Edited: I hope it is clear I disagree strongly with the poster to whom I am responding.

19. I went to my city's Veteran's Day parade on Veteran's Day. It was spectacular.
On the way down to the parade I drove by the Occupy encampment. There was a guy holding up a sign calling for abolishing the Federal Reserve, chatting with a guy holding a big anti-Israel sign.

The parade had a lot more meaning for me.
