Victims of Fort Hood shooting sue the Army for $750 million
Source: CNN

Victims and families of those killed in the Fort Hood massacre are asking compensation totaling $750 million from the government for failing to stop the attack.

Eighty-three administrative claims were filed last week, saying the Army, the FBI, and the Justice and Defense departments are guilty of gross and willful negligence for not recognizing that the man charged in the shootings, Maj. Nidal Hasan, was a threat.

"Although they had clear knowledge and warnings that Hasan posed a grave danger to the lives and safety of soldiers and civilians with whom he came into contact, they did nothing to eliminate the known risk posed by him," the "basis of claim" document alleges.

"On the contrary, bowing to 'political correctness,' the DOD, DOA (Department of the Army), DOJ, and FBI, in wanton disregard of the safety of military and civilian personnel, intentionally ignored the threat he presented," says the document, which was attached to each of the 83 claims.

10. That's not how they play the game. It'll come out of social services, as usual.

3. Maybe WAR should be privatized and paid for with vouchers Americans buy, if they choose to buy them.
Edited on Fri Nov-11-11 08:01 PM by valerief
If not, they won't have to pay for WAR. I wonder how many Americans would buy WAR vouchers.

Of course, the vouchers wouldn't be paid for from taxes. They'd come out of a citizen's personal savings.

Only rich people could afford WAR then, only rich people would pay for it, and maybe some 60% of discretionary taxes could go to creating jobs.

4. Once you pay
anyone for being a victim (9/11 victims) then the precedent is set. As much as many like to deny it - the love of money is the primary reason for our existence in the US. Anything else is "white" noise.

Peace

5. So no compassion or restitution for victims of crimes?
Conservatives complain that liberals emphasize victimhood over achievement. But let's not deny that people do get hurt.

6. Sure, they should sue Nidal Hasan
for every penny he has if he is found guilty.

7. Compassion? Sure, I got plenty of that for them but I'm not sure how they figure the government owes
over 700 million to them.

12. Still I am not sure if they have a viable case plus isnt the military providing the families with
survivors benefits already?
I could be wrong about that but if not then I wonder if this is more of a case of greed rather than need, greed on the families part and greed from the ambulance chasing lawyers part.

9. The problem here is that multiple people ignored this guy
and all the red flags raised about him from his co-workers. They had to work really hard to overlook that this guy had problems and was liable to meltdown.

11. Will not pass. This case has been heard and shot down before in other cases.

The police are not required to protect you. Their purpose is law enforcement, not civil protection. I'll try and find that court case if I can.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_v._District_of_Columbia
Warren v. District of Columbia
"By a 4-3 decision the court decided that Warren was not entitled to remedy at the bar despite the demonstrable abuse and ineptitude on the part of the police. The court held that official police personnel and the government employing them are not generally liable to victims of criminal acts for a failure to provide adequate police protection."
