Penn State Games Lose Sponsorship Deals
Source: WSJ

About a half-dozen advertisers have pulled commercials from ESPN's broadcasts of coming Pennsylvania State University football games, a person familiar with the matter said, a sign that the scandal at Penn State is causing fallout among marketers.

"I have multiple advertisers pulling ads from the ESPN broadcast," said one media-time buyer. "I am advising my clients to move out of games for the short term," another buyer added.

The identity of most of the advertisers couldn't be learned. On Thursday night, Cars.com, an online car-shopping site, said it was removing its commercials from broadcasts of coming games because of the "allegations surrounding the Penn State football program." These games include one against the University of Nebraska, which will air Saturday, and next Saturday's game against Ohio State

ESPN, owned by Walt Disney Co., isn't likely to experience much financial pain from ads that are pulled because in most cases marketers will just move the ads to other games. ESPN would have to refund ad dollars only if it didn't have comparable air time available elsewhere.

1. Not surprising. Who would want to be the "brought to you by"
at the end of "Potential rioting and discussions of pedophilia..."

Wish I believed the advertisers were motivated by more than concern for their own reputation, but at least they are not completely tone-deaf.

I don't think tomorrow can be anything but a sick and sad day no matter what happens on the field.

2. Penn State should cancel the rest of their season
or there will probably be fights in the stands if not on the field with rival team players and fans.

7. Ditto, Ditto, Ditto!
I can't believe that they are going to play on Saturday.

And all that bullshit about blue shirts...and white shirts.

Those are some kind of balls, Penn State.

9. I want the game, their season, their post-season if any, and the team to continue on
Edited on Fri Nov-11-11 11:43 PM by rocktivity
Yeah, it will cost them a few bucks, but they're simply going to have to learn how to win without it -- other colleges do.

Besides, I think it would be the best way of telling Paterno and company that they aren't the center of the universe and Penn State will survive them.

10. On the other hand, Penn State has always been..
too much about the football program. Maybe canceling the game would be a good gesture.

12. Yes, like the University of Chicago, which once had one of the best football programs.
They shut it down because they felt sports was starting to dominate, instead of scholastics.

15. Please remember that Penn State is not merely its football program.
Edited on Sun Nov-13-11 01:31 AM by gauguin57
It's a large educational and research institution, with several branch campuses across the state.

The football program needs to be cleaned out ... no question. And people need to quit worshiping at the altar of Joe Paterno. But the students who go to that school because it's a great school in so many academic disciplines shouldn't be punished because of what some coaches and administrators did.

A yearly dance marathon called THON at PSU is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. It's raised over $78 million for children w/cancer and their families.

There have been so many distinguished alumni of that school. Did you know that two alumni of PSU wrote the script for "Casablanca"? There's an alum directing "Saturday Night Live." The famed "Afghan Girl" photo in National Geographic was taken by a Penn State grad. Several screenwriters and directors have come out of Penn State. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists. Newberry Award-winning children's book authors. NPR correspondents. All sorts of ground-breaking scientists and engineers. The guy who oversaw the DNA testing that identified 9/11 victims. One of the main engineers on the rebuilding of One World Trade. Rosey Grier. Grammy-award-winning songwriter Mike Reid. And it goes on and on.

Don't judge the student body by one night of misbehavior by one group of students. Alcohol, emotion, immaturity and mob mentality can easily rule the night on a college campus.

And, yes; I am a proud Penn State alumna, who hardly ever watches PSU football anymore. I'm proud of the quality of the school as an educational institution. Many of my family members went there, and some worked there -- no one working anywhere near Beaver stadium.
