Oakland police union calls for end to "Occupy" camp
Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Anti-Wall Street protesters in Oakland rejected a call by the California city's police union on Friday for them to leave their encampment, creating the potential for a showdown.

The police request came one day after a man was shot to death near their protest site. But Occupy Oakland demonstrators said the shooting, which took place at a public transit station at the edge of Frank Ogawa Plaza on Thursday, had nothing to do with their movement.

The Oakland Police Officers Association, in an open letter to the protesters, said that police sympathized with their movement but that the city was in a "state of emergency."

5. Yeah
the cops are creating the emergency themselves - the power behind them and how little they want us to have - that's the emergency - whey the fuck do they think we're protesting anyways? those in power HAVE FAILED US.

12. "Those In Power Have Failed Us"
That applies across the board, whether it is the Jack Abramoff scandal, the Wall Street meltdown or even the current problems at Penn State. And big money is the fuel behind all of these horrific crimes. Clean up the money angle and the problems will be reduced hugely.

27. This cannot be said enough...
Add to that list the Election of 2000, GitMo, the Iraq invasion, Murdoch, the Supreme Court, and the list goes on and on. Even add my own place of employment!

It's become painfully obvious that those in power are not "the best and the brightest," but rather superficial pawns of the power elite. We (I) expected them to have wisdom and knowledge to fulfill their responsibilities; to justify their station in life. We (I) looked to them for guidance and inspiration. Instead we have a mob of twits who happened to be in the right place at the right time.

They are superficial; they are shallow. And they don't deserve our respect or support.

My stepfather used to stress that we strive for "knowledge, power, and responsibility" in life. "Knowledge" cultivated from learning and life's experiences, "Responsibility" in using that knowledge wisely and properly, and "Power" in putting that knowledge into action.

Our "leaders" tend to lack these traits and are only good for wearing "power suits" in their mad dash for the "corner office."

7. Odd coming from the union...what other things have they "called for an end to"?
Has the police union ever called for and end to domestic violence or an end to car-jacking? The police have now demonstrated without a doubt that they are acting from a political position and once that happens, they have lost all credibility to "protect and serve".

9. that was my first thought- the union?
what sort of authority does the police union to ask non-union members to do anything? or make any other sort of policy proclamation?
that is strange, imho.

28. Class traitors, race traitors, faith traitors, gender traitors, age
traitors - move along citizens, no plantation-based ideology to see here.

Yo, Bubba! Fucking entitlement mentality that some group, clan, union. corporation or whatever "owns" by vote, loyalty, contributions etc. doesn't play anymore. Slavery went out after the civil war and I own myself and can choose for myself. Those who dictate that I have to think and act a certain way because I was born into my class and shouldn't aspire to be different can kiss my class butt.

8. I would only leave when a viable means of having their voice heard is
given to the protesters. They just want to be part of the power
discussion not to be minimized and told to shut up and leave.
The first step is to get through the silencing and monopoly of
the megaphone of money so truth and ideas of progressing can
be heard.

10. Sounds like a veiled threat
So if the protests continue they can't guarantee others in the area won't get murdered?

How about making street patrol a higher priority than beating protesters?

The released emails in Tennessee show the State Highway Patrol complaining that the show of force would result in more highway deaths. It's no surprise that the crime rate in Oakland would likewise increase as officers are taken off of patrol to line them up in riot gear.

11. The Oakland Police Officers Association can fuck off.
They have no credibility on anything until they start 'policing' their own members.
At least the OWS movement takes responsibility to help clean up the governments' agent provocateur mess.

It is the cops that should be helping to clean up after the 'anarchists'.

Because if it's more than 30 days, all those people are residents of Oakland, iirc.

22. Oddly, some of the city's emergencies would be solved by a strong #Occupy movement.
I hope that they come to realize this, and to consider exactly who is attacking their pensions.

25. They're setting up their future excuse for violence against the Occupy Oakland
It's incredibly obtuse of them to not see that the movement can't be stopped even if the Occupy Oakland wanted to.

The union head should hang his or head in shame, both for the brutality and for this.
