Oakland police union calls for end to "Occupy" camp

(Reuters) - Anti-Wall Street protesters in Oakland rejected a call by the California city's police union on Friday for them to leave their encampment, creating the potential for a showdown.

The police request came one day after a man was shot to death near their protest site. But Occupy Oakland demonstrators said the shooting, which took place at a public transit station at the edge of Frank Ogawa Plaza on Thursday, had nothing to do with their movement.

The Oakland Police Officers Association, in an open letter to the protesters, said that police sympathized with their movement but that the city was in a "state of emergency."

It's become painfully obvious that those in power are not "the best and the brightest," but rather superficial pawns of the power elite. We (I) expected them to have wisdom and knowledge to fulfill their responsibilities; to justify their station in life. We (I) looked to them for guidance and inspiration. Instead we have a mob of twits who happened to be in the right place at the right time.

They are superficial; they are shallow. And they don't deserve our respect or support.

My stepfather used to stress that we strive for "knowledge, power, and responsibility" in life. "Knowledge" cultivated from learning and life's experiences, "Responsibility" in using that knowledge wisely and properly, and "Power" in putting that knowledge into action.

Our "leaders" tend to lack these traits and are only good for wearing "power suits" in their mad dash for the "corner office."

Has the police union ever called for and end to domestic violence or an end to car-jacking? The police have now demonstrated without a doubt that they are acting from a political position and once that happens, they have lost all credibility to "protect and serve".

How about making street patrol a higher priority than beating protesters?

The released emails in Tennessee show the State Highway Patrol complaining that the show of force would result in more highway deaths. It's no surprise that the crime rate in Oakland would likewise increase as officers are taken off of patrol to line them up in riot gear.
