Midnight deadline passes for Occupy Portland eviction

PORTLAND -- Occupy Portland supporters counted down the seconds, New Year's Eve style, as a midnight Saturday deadline passed for evacuation of two city parks occupied by demonstrators since October 6.

Many tents were removed earlier Saturday but, despite an eviction notice, about a hundred tents and about two hundred protesters remained in the encampment.

Ad the midnight deadline loomed, several thousand spectators converged on the downtown core, creating a party-like atmosphere.

With the word “Truth” taped over her mouth, Lulu Love was among the thousands of protestors gathered in Ankeny Plaza for the Occupy Portland rally and march Thursday afternoon. Portland joined the Occupy Wall Street movement that has grown since mid-September.

Thousands of protestors took to the streets of downtown Portland Thursday afternoon to voice their displeasure with corporate America.

(There were no official estimates of the crowd size, but protestors filled Pioneer Courthouse Square and stretched for several blocks during the march.)

“I think most of America is fed up with the way things are going,” said 56-year-old Earl Smith, who held a sign that read: “Tax the 1%ers.”
