Newt Gingrich rises to the top tier in two new polls
Source: Yahoo News

Two national polls released Monday show former Speaker Newt Gingrich surging from the bottom tier to double digits in the past week, replacing businessman Herman Cain near the top with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

A CNN/ORC International Poll conducted from Nov. 11-13 shows 22 percent of Republicans and independents who lean Republican saying they now support Gingrich. With a sampling error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points, that puts Gingrich in a statistical dead heat with Romney, the longtime frontrunner. In a Public Policy Polling survey also released Monday, Gingrich rose to the lead, a full 10 percentage points ahead of Romney.

The data suggest that Gingrich's presence in the top tier comes at the expense of businessman Herman Cain, whose support dropped by 11 percentage points in the CNN poll and five points according to PPP amid accusations of sexual harassment made over the past two weeks.

As support for other candidates has fluctuated, only Romney has consistently remained in the top tier. Over the past five months of PPP surveys, support for Romney has shifted by just 2 percentage points. In the CNN poll, Romney polled as high as 35 percent when the campaign season first got off the ground in June, but he has never fallen below 18 percent.

God, I wish it were Newt, but no, it'll be mittens.

19. No way for veep
Newt as Veep wouldn't add anything to a Romney ticket.

Martinez, Rubio, Sandoval?

I'd even throw Hutchison in the mix as a possibility. She's retiring from the senate.

Could Pawlenty help Mitt win Minn?

21. Doubtful T-Paw would help Mitt
even in MN. In rural MN GOP circles Newt is more popular in off year straw polls than Pawlenty. Newt's over the top rhetoric captures the attention and Pawlenty is too milquetoast bland for most people.

24. Hutchison would ensure a third party bolt
Conservatives don't trust Romney as it is, he'd need a real right-winger as his VP.

5. Remember, McCain's campaign floundered early on, too
complete with staff departures and all.

But by the end, he was the only one left standing. :scared:

Edited on Mon Nov-14-11 04:26 PM by Proud Public Servant
Remember this psychotronic press release from last May?

The literati sent out their minions to do their bidding. Washington cannot tolerate threats from outsiders who might disrupt their comfortable world. The firefight started when the cowardly sensed weakness. They fired timidly at first, then the sheep not wanting to be dropped from the establishment’s cocktail party invite list unloaded their entire clip, firing without taking aim their distortions and falsehoods. Now they are left exposed by their bylines and handles. But surely they had killed him off. This is the way it always worked. A lesser person could not have survived the first few minutes of the onslaught. But out of the billowing smoke and dust of tweets and trivia emerged Gingrich, once again ready to lead those who won’t be intimated by the political elite and are ready to take on the challenges America faces.

I leave it to someone else to link to John Lithgow's brilliant rendition of it.

9. As long as it's not Cain.....
Cain is the only candidate that would worry me.... Newt or Mittens and you have the typical grand old white boy party..... i.e., when push came to shove the establishment racists needed a white face on the ticket....

15. The Mormon not named Mitt actually evolved beyond the primordial ooze.
That's the biggest reason he'll never be a serious contender for Rethug prez. Who knows about Santorum. Probably his broken record, 24/7 harping on the homosexual agenda and abortion to the exclusion of all else.

23. Newt has too much baggage. Example A: Spanish is “the language of living in a ghetto”
One surge in the polls and little nuggets of Newt's wisdom like this start popping up again.

He was DOA from the moment he announced. However, his rise in the polls does go to show how desperate the GOPers are right now. They've not a real viable candidate in the mix they can stomach.
